You Tube wants your mobile numbers? WTF

I just closed my original account on YouTube because I want to use my main e-mail (MSN hotmail one) for a brand new account about TV/Movies and the general media. My other account uses an G-Mail account so this never came up but since am using a hotmail for this new one YOUTUBE in their wisdom wants my mobile number to send a text to verify my account...

WTF :wtf: when did this start ?

My phone is broke at moment so I can't do this, seriously ever since Google brought YouTube its slowly gone down hill and now this

Talk about privacy issues.

Craigslist does the same thing, sometimes. It can be you did something that set off an alarm in their system and they just want to verify you are a real person (hate the method though), or you're on a network many other people are using and they suspect you up to somthing, blah, blah, more accurate detailed info not provided in this reponse.

Anyway, like Craigslist, if it prompts you, wait a few hours and just use another computer (not on the same connection). No, clearing cookies won't help. IF it's anything like Craigslist, suddenly that phone number they asked for, will NOT be required in spite of posting the exact same thing.

Yeah, as of late I've hated a number of things YouTube/Google have done. And now phone verify? That's a crossed line, in my opinion.

Get a Google Voice Account (they're free). It accepts voice and txt messages. Turn off "Call forwarding" and use it for this "number confirm" prompts. It's what I do.

Well, they're not gettin' my cell number! Call me a dinosaur if you want, but my cellphone number is only for people I want to be able to find me when I'm "not available." I can count the number of people who have my cell number on the fingers of one hand - and still twirl a baton! :D

Yeah, I came across that when I locked myself out of my Gmail account and needed to verify myself in order to get access back to it, and I have to say, it didn't work. Maybe it was because I'm in Canada, but it did have a pulldown menu to select the Country. Having Google send out a text was one of the options, and I do really dislike how they make that the prominent option. In other words, if you want to contact them by email, they have a link to a form in smaller text.

Why would you buy an android phone if you don't buy into the google ecology (and I can understand why people might not want to)?
