I only wish whenever a US show did a "sci fi convention" episode, or made reference to Doctor Who, they wouldn't always couch it in being something for nerds and geeks, or something to poke fun at. I remember CSI did an episode like this a few years ago, which featured cameos by people involved with nuBSG, and one of CSI's female leads was shown wearing a Starfleet-like uniform and all that. But in tone and context it still put sci-fi fans in the same league as the animal costume-loving "fuzzies" featured in CSI's equivalent of "Trouble with Tribbles" a few years earlier.
I never saw the Grey's episode so I don't know how they handled it, but for example the next time a show sets an episode at a sci-fi convention, rather than focusing on the overweight guys, the guys with glasses, the "parents' basement dwellers", the 40-year-old virgins and all those other stereotypes (not to mention the downright insane) - and having some lead character making some smart-alek remark ("Who watches Doctor Who?" - Tony Dinozzo, NCIS) it would be refreshing to show, say, the incredibly hot women who dress up as Red Sonja and Power Girl, or the fact you've got people the likes of Olivia Munn and a large number of sexy actresses who profess to be "geeks" for sci-fi (I'm a guy, so feel free to substitute "sexy actor" names of choice). At least it would fight the stereotype a little. Reveal that one of the characters in Grey's became a doctor because she was inspired by Dr. Crusher, for example.
