You know what I like TNG "Evolution"

I just wish a future Star Trek show would have followed this one up.

I mean what kind of lifeforms did the nanites evolve into? I'd love to visit that planet again and Discovery seems about the only place we are likely to meet them again.

Dr crusher, I believe.

IIRC, Beverley suggests using destructive nanites as a weapon against the Borg. I think she was referring here more to the 'unevolved' form that Wesley started out experimenting with.

Though having the sentient nanites agree to combat the Borg would have been an interesting experiment. Borg nanoprobes might be more advanced to begin with, but with the speed those nanites were evolving, they might eventually leave them into the dust.

And 900 years into the future well I wonder what they are like in Disco's new time..

Perhaps they simply devolved after their peak, and they are now that 'programmable matter' we see :) After all, we will apparently devolve into salamanders after millions of years, and 800 years probably would be a comparable time period for those nanites....

That would be an absolute shame if that is true.

I suspect the magical nanoprobes (e.g. seen in STFC) came about in the first place because the Federation left a box of nanites on the Borg's doorstep at Wolf 359 and, whoops!, the Borg instantly assimilated them (unlike each time we get the expositiondump of "Our phasers will only have one maybe two hits each before they adapt" (yet still zap away more than two times each before any of them do adapt... and eventually they're going to run out of range values to use and yet only four of them are there, whee...))
