I was going to add saying that Data would have likely wore a movie uniform whilst in and shortly after the Academy. Though I'd think Data would looked weird in the movie style uniform.

Scotty who appeared in TNG would have worn the TWOK uniform too as well, and so would Spock and McCoy.

And the old Admirals Quinn and Hansen would have graduated the Academy in the late movie era to have worn the turtleneck version too.

I always rationalized that to be short for some kind of stardate, rather than year.
