Yes! Computers are the future

But Computers need to get better and run faster with Faster downloads. Computers might take over your TV someday. Has anyone ever heard of the Slingbox? I cannot tell you what a slingbix is..Its against the rules of the forum. But this i can tell you what it does for you. You can watch your favorite TV shows right in front of your puter from another state or from another country. It shows you just what kind of technology is growing fast

I now watch about 90% of my TV viewing through the net, and I would wager that a sizable minority of trekbbs does the same.

I remember watching a programme a few years ago set in about 2020 where there were no longer any TV stations as they could not make money. As soon as they broadcast a programme it would be pirated on the net without the adverts so they didn't make any money...(sound familor?)

At the end of the programme the last TV station, the BBC closed down. People could either watch old reruns, or user generated TV.

Doesn't Star Trek predict the demise of TV?

Slingbox costs money whereas TVersity and Air Video are free.

I have one. When i go on vacation i can still watch News and sports from Baltimore instead of stupid Miami stations

Against forum rules to talk about Slingbox? Not sure about that. Unless your trying to sell us one?

Oh, and I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.

I own a Roku box. A simple $99 investment that has already paid off in many ways.
With a Roku box, I can watch the following on my television:

Watch Netflix Instant Streaming movies
Purchase or Rent movies to download from Amazon.com to watch instantly.
Listen to Pandora Radio.
Check my Facebook stats
Watch exclusive sports programs
And lots more.

Aside from that, I watch Hulu when I want to see the latest episode of The Simpsons.

I really don't see the appeal to watching TV program over a computer - straining your eyes at the monitor, stress on your back and neck from sitting in an uncomfortable position, choppy, slow streaming of the program.....

IMHO, nothing beats just kicking back on your sofa when you get home, snack and drink in hand, watching TV off a nice large screen in the room. Much more comfortable and informal :techman:

There's a thing called Project Canvas here in the UK, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, as well as BT and Talk Talk have joined forces to create a standard for IPTV. So that any one who wants to can create a set top box or online TV channel using their software.

Sky have problems with this, saying there's no reason public money should be spent on this project, but seems to me this is a great step forward in TV and it's right there should be public money spent on creating a standard anyone can use, be they free services or pay services.

It originally started out as Project Kangeroo, meant to be a content aggregator, but it was decided that the BBC shouldn't have a hand in such a commercial service and it was sold off and has become SeeSaw.

Personally I hope they do set an open standard which allows an easy plug and play set top box for online TV.

^ Roku will have the best luck at it. They get new content providers all the time.
You can already watch thousands of videos and movies, and listen to hundreds of radio stations all through the Roku set top box.

Looks like that's US only though.

You know, most computers have graphics cards with HDMI outputs now. My computer is hooked up to a 42" LCD.

As far as slow, choppy streaming, you're getting your media the wrong way. No one is talking about YouTube videos here.

...Has anyone ever heard of the Slingbox? I cannot tell you what a slingbox is..Its against the rules of the forum...

Actually, there's no reason you can't say what a slingbox is, because it's legal. Here's a link to the company website.

A slingbox gives you access to the signals that are available at your home while you are away from home, or in your home where there isn't a TV but there is a PC. The source can be broadcast TV if that's what you get, or if you are a cable subscriber, access to those channels. It will only show what it has normal wired access to.

A Slingbox is NOT a public access streaming server. Access is controlled by a unique identifier for each slingbox in addition to password protection.

If the poster is alluding to gaining illegal access to a Slingbox you do not personally own, then you are correct about this being against forum rules.
