Yarrrr! Proposal to sail the seas of moon Titan by boat

If we believe it is going to be liquid methane, the density can be estimated close enough (specific gravity of liquid methane is 0.46454kg/litre at -164C at standard pressure). We wouldn't expect this to vary greatly as liquids don't compress that much with changes to temperature and pressure.

Then you do the same as with any submarine. Make something that should float, then have an internal chamber that can be flooded by a controlled amount to make the overall density of the craft equal that of the sea.

There's ethane too, but it is probably close enough to methane with an SG of .57. That's not terribly far from the difference between fresh water and sea water, calculating the SG shouldn't be as much of a challenge as I had imagined. Unless there's other stuff in the mix also. No way to tell other than going and dipping some toes, sensors, or other appendages in there. Sometimes remote sensing isn't enough.

I'm not sure what you'd blow out a ballast tank with at those temperatures though!

hydrogen or helium?

Or you could use syringes, and mechanically suck or blow sea liquid into the barrels of the syringes. The ship would otherwise be a sealed body, and the internals pressurized with helium gas, which would never need to be vented.

Then as long as power is available, the submarine can dive and rise at leisure.
