Y: The Last Man Rising Online Fan Film

Y: The Last Man Rising
I just watched this morning, and as a Y newbie I thought it was pretty good. I haven't read the comics yet, but I plan once I get through some of my very long list of stuff I own but haven't read yet.

Good production values, bad writing and acting, as is the case with so many such efforts. (Douchebag pilots get served food and make a pass at a stewardess a minute or two before beginning their descent?!)

Instead of telling a coherent, small story from the series or focusing on a specific moment in oder to impart some its general flavor, it tries doing a bit of both, with a random, jarring transition between the two, and ultimately fails overall.

Also, why is 355 not in Jordan when the plague hits? And why is it daytime in both LA and Afghanistan?

There's little to no point into putting so much effort into fancy effects if you're going to be that cavalier about the basics.

Aside from the issues Gaith touched on...I really enjoyed this a great deal. Thanks for posting it JD. To bad the actual film adaptation seems to be stuck in development hell right now.

Also, to see their Yorick casually get up and walk away from a nasty beating, when so much of Vaugh's series emphasizes the pain and damage of violence, strikes me as totally antithetical to the spirit of the source. Nah, screw this effort.

As for a real adaptaion, I agree with the common appeal for an HBO series rather than a movie, and I think such a series should be heavily green-screened, at that, to give certain scenes and moments a heavily stylized look without sticking out from the rest. For me, a big chunk of the series' emotional power comes from quasi-impressionistic uses of color such as these:

... and I'd hate to see that lost.
