XBOX360 Question: Transfering game from one machine to another

Hi Guys, This is the situation.

Moved in with a friend last year and he already had his xbox 360 set up to the big screen tv in the living room, so I never bothered to set mine up. I just used his.

I've been playing Fallout 3 for awhile now, and have got my guy up to level 20, now I'm just waiting for the last of the 3 downloads to be released then I will keep playing.

The problem is, my room mate just got a new job and is moving away (and more importantly taking his xbox with him).

So, does anyone know a way for me to transfer my saved Fallout 3 game from his xbox to mine? Can I just use a USB drive? If I buy a XBOX 360 memoery card will that work? Or am I screwed and I have to start over?

Any help you can provide will bring you good karma. :)

You should be able to transfer your game using an XBox memory unit, but I've heard of quirkiness with Fallout 3. Some friends tried copying a saved game but the 360 didn't want to let it transfer to a different XBox Live account. I'm wondering if it was because they had some of the XBox Live expansions to Fallout 3 on the account.

So, it should work, but may not.

You can't transfer saves between accounts (at least not without a little modding) because then you could use those saves to unlock achievements.

Of course if you're using the same profile on both Xboxs it shouldn't be any trouble to transfer saves (except for the few that can't be copied, I believe those are mostly Team Ninja games).

Yeah, if it's your account, it shouldn't be a problem with a memory card. If it's not though, then you'll have to get that XSATA hard drive tool... or, well, you might need to start over.

^Yeah, even with a device like XSATA you will have some trouble because game saves are locked to an individual's account. If you transfer a save between accounts you can still use it but all achievements are disabled for that game from then on.

Of course, this is only a problem if you care about achievements and if you'd been using someone else's account to earn them in the first place I doubt you do.

If you've used your own account, just buying a memory card will do the trick. In fact, there's no reason why you can't just store the save on the memory card and then you can swap from console to console as much as you like.

This won't affect you as Fallout 3 isn't a Team Ninja game but Kaijufan is right. Saved games for their games (the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series) can't be moved between consoles. Believe it or not, the reason for this is that Team Ninja don't want anyone hacking their games to change or remove the female character's clothing. (Which seems a bit odd to me given that in Western versions of the DoA games many of the female characters have "??" listed for their age - it's easy to figure out why.)

Hmmm... Thanks for the heads up guys. I don't have my own Xbox Live Account, although I was thinking of getting one when I got my system back up and running. The Xbox I am on right now does have Xbox Live, but I never used it. I just have a profile on the machine.

Sounds like it might not work. Now the debate... Is it worth paying $30.00+ for a memory card that I don't need or expect to ever use angain except for this one instance and even then it might not even work. Or replay the whole game at 100+ hours...

EDIT: I think it would be worth it to risk getting the memory card. 100+ hours is a lot of time to spend redoing the game over. And if it doesn't work then maybe I'll wait for the "game of the year" edition to come out that will have all the expansions, updates, and new stuff on it before restarting the game.

^It will work. And yes, having a memory card is a good idea. You can back up your saves on to it in case your hard disk fails.

Out of curiosity, he can't move it from his offline account on one xbox to the offline account on the other, right? He'll need to move the whole account over and have them side by side? What if they have the same name?

I'm glad I only play on one Xbox, my own. Gamertags are great and all, but the portability seems a bit troublesome. And I feel sorry for anyone like my friend who has a bunch of saves and achievements on an offline account, and then made an Xbox Live account, but didn't convert the offline account. Trust me, it can become a complete clusterfuck once your save games are spread across both, and you buy DLC on one account for games that you played on your original account, etc...

My XBL profile permanently resides on a memory unit so I can take it with me.

You mentioned having a profile on your friend's machine. I haven't done this, but if I'm not mistaken can't you just upgrade that to an XBL Gold account? That would fix most of your problems, but you'll still need a memory unit to move it to your own machine.

That's a good idea. Didn't think of that. With the "red ring of doom" always lurking in the background having a save of your games is a good idea.

The Red Ring does not indicate hard drive failure. If you get the Red Ring, your hard drive is most likely still ok. A red Ring with 3 red lights indicates a hardware problem, ie the core Xbox system, not the hard drive. It would only be the hard drive if just one quadrant is lit red. That error is not so common. Though it's still good to have a backup, just in case.
