XBOX Games...

So after about 10 years of being a PC-only gamer, I've decided to once again make a foray into the console realm. Being rather poor at the moment, I can't afford any shiny new seventh-generation systems, so I've opted for a used XBOX.

Since many here are game-savvy, I thought I'd ask your advice and opinions on what games I should get, and if any of the ones I'm planning on getting are actually pure crap and I just don't know it. Here's a list of what I'm currently planning to buy:

~ Halo

~ Halo 2

~ Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

~ Star Trek: Shattered Universe (I've seen poor fan reviews, but I played it breifly on Kommander's PS2, and liked it just fine)

~ Godzilla: Save the Earth (Want a Godzilla game, but was unsure which was the better choice between Destroy All Monsters Melee and this. Went with this because its newer and has more playable monsters.)

~ Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

~ Doom 3 (How big of a hit do the graphics take from the PC version?)

~ Half-Life 2 (Same question)

~ Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (Saw a commercial once upon a time. Looked cool, and I've never played many adventure games. Wanna try it out)

~ Grand Theft Auto III & Vice City (Played V.C. on buddy's PS2 a bit, liked it)

Feedback much appreciated. :)

My favorite XBox games:
Halo 1 & 2
Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (RPG/beat em up)
X-Men Legends 1 & 2 (same as MUA, 2 not so much)
Crimson Skies (an early title yet gorgeous graphics, a combat flier)
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 (RPG)
Hunter the Reckoning Redeemer (fun beat/shoot em up)
Batman Rise Sin Tzu (fun beat em up)
Return Castle Wolfenstein (so-so graphics fun levels)

Halo 1..Great game, definitely worth a play.

Halo 2...Great sequel and again definitely worth a play through.

MKDA....Fighting game, once you have played one you have played them all.

STSU...This is a mixed game, on certain level it seems to capture the Trek universe, and on other it looks like it been thrown together at the last minute...you will love and hate this game in equal amounts.

Godzilla...I have no idea, never played any Godzilla games.

Elder Scroll III....Make sure you inform everybody that you wont see them when playing this game, as it will become you life, it so massive.

Doom 3...I played DOOM 3 on a PC with a 512meg video card and i can tell you there was a massive difference in graphic quality between PC capable of playing this game on full and the console....but its still worth a try.

H-L 2....Stick with the PC version.

POP....This is a must buy, brilliant game.

GTAIII-VC...Nothing wrong with these games, very playable no matter what hardware they are on.

Max Payne 1 & 2 , you can get them both from E.B. games for under $3.00 ea.
and Half Life.

jade Empire
Silent hill 2
Burnout 2 (in my view the best one)
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is class (the sequels are not as good as the 1st game although the 3rd game does improve a lot over the Emo 2nd game
Fable is not bad
X-Men Legends 1 & 2 (if you want to just get 1 then the 2nd game)

Crimson Skies-many hours wasted on this. Lots of fun.
Fable is a pretty good rpg(but its not Morrowwind)
Indiana Jones was surprisingly good

Crimson Skies looks interesting indeed. I'm seriously considering it. I've thought a good deal about Max Payne as well. If you're talking about the original Half-Life, PKerr, I have it and all the expansions for the PC and am quite content with them there, but good suggestion.

I'm very interested in the Silent Hill series, but don't want to start on the second without playing the first. Since I plan to get an old PS1 sometime in the future, I'll have to add #2 to the possibilities list.

Knights of the Old Republic looks kinda cool. I've never been that into Star Wars, but I played it at my girlfriend's and liked the RPG approach. Didn't play but an hour or so into the game, though, and I hear the sequel wasn't nearly as good. Those two are a sketchy "maybe".

Are any of the 007 games any good?

^Don't worry about Silent Hill, the second has nothing but setting in common with the first, the third is sorta related to the first, and the forth has nothing to do with anything.

KOTOR2 is not as good as it was rushed out and very buggy on the xbox.

007 games are ok in a average way

Agent under fire is quite poor
Nightfire is fairly good back in the day
Everything or nothing (3rd person shooter unlike the others)

sums up my view of the game pretty much

Goldeneye: Rogue agent = shit

I think Doom 3 takes a bit of a hit in the visuals department for the Xbox version, but IIRC there's campaign co-op (is that right?), which would more than make up for it

IMO Halo 2 is the Xbox game with the most bang-for-your-buck. H2 multiplayer was unparalleled for Xbox.

Some of these may be difficult, perhaps even impossible, to locate.
  • Beyond Good & Evil
  • Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Destroy All Humans!
  • Fable: The Lost Chapters
  • Indigo Prophecy
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Halo 2
  • Jade Empire
  • Max Payne
  • Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
  • Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Stubbs the Zombie in "Rebel Without a Pulse"
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3

Yeah, I'm sold on Halo 1 & 2. Beaten them both at my ex-roommate's, and love them to death. Doubt I'll be doing any multiplayer stuff, though. The only thing I might do is battle my friends on Mortal Kombat if they ever come over. I don't have an ethernet line in my room, and even the one in here kinda sucks, as it is VERY tempermental when it comes to bandwidth. Note: If you don't have Hughesnet, don't get it. With their "Fair Access Policy" they'll knock your bandwidth down to sub-dial-up speeds for several hours for a even moderate amount of downloading.

~ Halo

~ Halo 2

Both excellent.

~ Doom 3 (How big of a hit do the graphics take from the PC version?)

~ Half-Life 2 (Same question)

They both take a bit of a hit, but they both still look very good. These are two of the best shooters available for the XBox, so don't hesitate to buy them.

If you enjoy shooters, then I would also recommend:

Area 51
Black
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
Darkwatch
Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil
Far Cry: Instincts
Painkiller: Hell Wars
Pariah
Project: Snowblind
The Suffering

~ Grand Theft Auto III & Vice City (Played V.C. on buddy's PS2 a bit, liked it)

More good choices.

If you enjoy GTA-style games, then you should definitely pick up Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction and Scarface: The World is Yours.

if you like racers Forza Motorsport is THE racer to get on xbox
in my opinion it's far better than Garan Turismo . . . far better

TES3 Morrowind is also one of my all time favorites
(quick tip for making money: go to the Scamp in the orc house in Caldera :D)

No racer love here, eh? Rallisport Challenge 2 and PGR2 are two of the best racing games of all-time, IMO.

I couldn't get into either Forza game despite how much I enjoyed the Gran Turismo games on the PS1 and PS2.

Here are some games I would suggest

Star Wars KOTOR-Personally I never got into star wars games but this is a flat out awesome RPG in its own right and better than the movies in my opinion. Avoid the sequel though

Jade Empire-Another excellent RPG by the people who made KOTOR. I find jade empire to be the superior game with a better storyline and an amazing atmosphere and setting

Deus Ex II: Invisible War-I know many here disliked it way back when it came out but I enjoyed it greatly. A good FPS with RPG elements

Project Snowblind-Originally created as a Deus Ex game but then converted to a new game, its probably one of the more under-rated games on the Xbox

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction- A Grand Theft Auto like game set in North Korea on the verge of collapse. I actualy liked this game much more than anything GTA has done. It original started out as a game in the "Strike" helicopter combat franchise (Jungle Strike, Desert Strike, Soviet Strike, etc)

Metal Gear Sold 2 Substance- Since you said youre just getting back into console gaming, I assume you have not gotten around to playing this franchise yet. You really really should lol. Unfortunately the only game in the franchise for Xbox is this one.

Splinter Cell 1-3: a stealth combat game along the lines of Metal Gear Solid. It actually has a bit more emphasis on stealth than the MGS games and controls better as far as I am concerned. it is also more grounded in reality when compared to the MGS franchise

Jet Set Radio Future, Shenmue II, and Panzer Dragoon Orta are my favourite Xbox games, and they all got very favourable critical reactions. If you were just going to pick one though, I'd highly recommend JSRF.

There are some multiplatform games you might like to try too, unless you already played them on PC: Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy is amazing, and so are Beyond Good & Evil, and Jade Empire.

Crimson Skies is a PC game, High Road to Revenge on Xbox is the sequel. You should consider playing both. :)

Indeed, I highly recommend both games. Just be warned that the PC game is very buggy. I believe there's a patch floating around out there, but IIRC it didn't quite fix all of the issues.

Still, a fun game with great atmosphere.
