X-Files Fight the Future

Magellan

Commander
Red Shirt
Finally got around to seeing the first X files movie. I gotta say I was pretty underwhelmed. I expected everything to be a bit...bigger. It felt like a long episode, and actually some of the two parters were more epic.

It seemed like everything in the movie were things I had already previously seen in the series. The alien oil parasites, smoking man, well manicured man, vague future colonization working with the conspiracy, the bees, Scully gets captured for the millionth time etc.

I can see why they couldn't really move things forward with the movie because they had to make sure the TV audience could follow along. However the movie seems like it would be incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't a TV viewer but not that exciting if you are due to there being no big reveals in it. The back to status quo ending really seals it. The X Files are re-instated and.....thats about it. Nothing has really changed, except Mulder gets to keep hunting down proof of the conspiracy. They didn't even let *really* kiss. :(

I admit it was confusing. Did I miss something really good in there?

Did anyone see the movie before the series? Did you like it? Did it make sense?

No, I think you about nailed it. Though I still like it.

You'll be very disappointed by the second movie, if your post is any indication.

On the plus side, we got an excellent score by Mark Snow ,especially the field/helicopter chase.

I thought it really felt like a big-budget version of the TV series (for better or worse).

I can't remember the details at the moment, but it seemed like they acted like the black oil was something new, even though it had been seen on the series already. The same thing with bees, too?

But I think such rapid gestation of aliens inside human bodies was a new development, and that affected things in the series.

It was a little frustrating that Scully was half-asleep and had her face in the snow, and never actually saw the spaceship, so she was still a skeptic in the following episodes.

Although really, wouldn't anyone? I liked Fight the Future when I watched all the X-Files back in 2013, but the second movie was a bit of a damp squib of a way to end the franchise.

Its a common problem with TV series going to the big screen. The movies often just feel like an episode with bigger budget. Star Trek had the same problem with the TNG cast. Its because the same producers/writers behind the TV show do also the movie - and its too difficult to flip the switch to the different format - they keep the same way of thinking.

I love "Fight the Future," and at the time I thought it was pretty epic, but you have to keep in mind that it takes place between two seasons of the show. They couldn't really do TOO much with it, otherwise the new season probably would have confused some people who may not have been able to see the movie yet.

Well the first X-Files movie is definatly the best of the two movies they did. But I haven't seen either fully in years

You hit the nail on the head there. That's basically it. It's CC being CC with the bee stopping them from kissing. Hated that scene back in the day, and still hate it now.

Did a re watch of it awhile back and still only remember as much of it as I did after seeing it in theaters.

Only bits and pieces. It was an ok film, but only that to me.

The Black Oil wasn't new, but the alien popping out of the guy was, and the Syndicate were really disturbed by that which lead to the soft spoken man, or whatever he's called, basically telling Mulder everything before he's blown up. Plus the X-Files being reopened was supposed to be a big deal because the final episode of season five was supposed to be the final episode of the series. The continuing X-Files were supposed to be movies. That didn't happen, of course.
