WWDC '09 discussion - new iPhone, Snow Leopard, iPhone OS 3.0

I bought an iPhone 3G back in November. Was a little bummed to hear that a new phone was coming out already, but to be honest, the new phone doesn't offer any features that I care about.

YOU'RE bummed? I just bought MINE on frickin' THURSDAY! :(

One thing I would have liked is the 32GB available on the new one. Ah well.

Actually because it's within 30 days, I think you can exchange it...

Impressive. Apple had the chance to bitchslap both Microsoft (Zune HD) and Palm (Pre) back to the stone age and failed on both fronts.

An uber-iPhone and iPod Touch HD would have given their competition no chance to catch up, but these rather underwhelming announcements leave plenty of room for them to do so since both machines offer things the iPhone/iPod Touch don't. Yes, technology isn't everything but it DOES matter in this arms race.

It almost feels like Apple aren't feeling threatened by their competition so they're not bothering to bring out the big guns...not unlike some other companies out there (e.g., Microsoft, Sony). Big mistake, IMO.

You know, after 7 years of "iPod Killers" that failed to do anything, I'm not really looking forward to another decade of supposed "iPhone Killers."

It's getting old.

The Pre is good. It will sell well. But to pretend that the iPhone is in trouble from that is no different than saying "Oh no, Honda came out with a new car...Toyota is doomed!"

It's nonsense.

To put it another way, Microsoft's domination of the personal computer market made people think that all tech fields needed a clear winner. But the PC was the aberration, not the norm. The future of technology will be just as diverse as other markets like cars, video game consoles, and movie companies. Mobile computing smart-phones? No clear leader. Web browsers? Becoming more diverse every day. And so on.

There will be room for several "winners" in the mobile computing field. People need to stop using the 90's as their model. It's not turning out that way again.

Perhaps I framed my message badly, but I wasn't looking at it from the perspective of "The iPhone's in trouble!" at all.

As someone who's very seriously considering dropping Sprint in the next few months because their mobile signal is mediocre at best in my apartment, I was hoping Apple would up the ante a bit more than they did, just like they did with the original iPhone and iPod Touch. That would've made my choice of which phone and carrier to choose pretty easy. As it stands, I'll just put up with my crap mobile signal for awhile longer and wait for the Pre to show up on a non-Sprint carrier in 6 months and see how the other competitors like the Nokia N97 fare.

I gotcha.

I think a lot of these phones are all really good, and they all show that this stuff must not be as easy to make perfect as we think it is. Because you're right, no one's blowing anyone else away to the extent that your choice would be easy.

Honestly, I don't think Apple has anything to worry about. Reviews of the Pre have been good but not spectacular. I haven't heard anything about the phones flying off of the shelf or stirring up the same media hype as when the original iPhone went on sale. And Microsoft has no chance of catching up to Apple when it comes to MP3/media devices. The iPod has won the war, and the silly new Zune HD won't do much to change things. To be honest, I don't really understand the need for HD in such a small, portable device anyway. Big screens? Yes. Small screens? No.

Apple also has another ace in the hole with the App Store. No one else can touch that. So I'd rather let Apple take their time and do things right when it comes to new products. This new iPhoone 3GS is basically just an update to the existing phone, and that's okay. I'm sure within a year they'll have something completely new and different.

The "HD" in the new Zune's name refers to the built-in HD Radio antenna and output of videos to a television at 720p.

Sure. Excuse me while I continue browsing the web on my IBM computer while listening to music on my Sony Walkman. Then maybe later tonight I'll go play some games on my Atari 2600 or go for a drive in my GM car. :techman:

Cute. I think I see the point you're trying to make, which is that technology is constantly changing and companies must struggle to stay ahead of the game and innovate in order to maintain a competitive advantage. Sure, it's true. But I don't think that Apple needs to rush some sort of ultimate iPod/multimedia device because the competition is nowhere near catching up to them. The iPod and iPhone lineups have conquered the market, and a company like Microsoft has a lot of work to do if they even want to consider stealing some of Apple's market share. Meanwhile, I'm sure Apple is cooking up something good. They can't just grow complacent and sit around doing nothing. They need to continue to refine their products and seek out new innovation. But they don't need to rush something to the market just because Microsoft has a new Zune.
