Would there be the same uproar if Shatner was in it but not Nimoy?

Think about it. Spock was really as popular if not more popular than Kirk. If I recall, early in the original series Nimoy's spock become increasingly popular especially after the Naked Time aired. And so much so that Shatner felt threatened and made sure he had more lines that Nimoy.

But for some reason, I find it hard to believe that if this movie had Shatner but not Nimoy, that there would be the same uproar. I'm a fan of both actors/characters but I must say I’m surprised how popular the shat is and all the angry reaction its getting from the Shatner fans and even casual star trek fans. The casual trekkie seems to be puzzled. They are all saying “But Nimoy is in it..so Shatner should be also”. It seems some people just cant except the possibility that the script would only work with Shatner NOT in it.

Of course after the movies is released is when anyone really can say if that decision was wise or not.

But seriously if the movie DID NOT have Nimoy (and Nimoy also would want to be in it like Shatner does now), would u have Nimoy fanatics doing the same thing the shatner crowd is doing right now? Or do hardcore Nimoy fans pattern Spock's character of being rather cool and unemotional....hmm I wonder

I think we can safely assume that no matter what TBTB were doing with this movie that large segments of Trekdom would still be bitching about it.

Nimoy would never be as publicly whiny as Shatner has been, so the uproar would have happened initially and then died to a hum.

I agree. Shatner has pushed the issue himself in the media. Nimoy would never have said a word (it's just not logical).

Hate to say it, but I agree with you.

In Trek Fandom you can never please all of the people - ever.

No, there would not.

For one thing, as noted above, Nimoy would have had a single polite and positive-sounding answer worked out and would briefly offer it whenever the question was broached and only when necessary. It's the simple, professional way that most performers deal with questions about roles that they aren't offered or that they decline - nothing novel or complicated about it.

No one bitched as loudly when Nimoy wasn't in Generations.

Nimoy is also a class act. He wouldn't be sinking to Shatner's level of self obsession about not being included.

I agree with these two posts. :)

To be fair to Shatner, he's also still very active in show business, on a hit television show, known for those Priceline commercials etc., so there's really more opportunities for him to asked about not being in the movie. Had Nimoy not been included, he might have been asked a question here and there when he was publicizing his photography project, but being retired from acting would have meant a lot fewer opportunities to be asked, and thus easier for Nimoy to stay out of the spotlight. Even if that was not the case though, I do agree in finding it hard to imagine Nimoy saying anything but polite and positive supportive comments.

I have to ask--what uproar?

I was thinking the same thing. There's been some minor bitching about it, but even that seems to have died down now. Most people are in a wait and see mode now.
Which is as it should be. Watch the movie, then complain.

Well, of course there would be. After all, the story of the movie involves Old Spock, and does not involve Old Kirk. Therefore, if Shatner was in the movie and Nimoy wasn't, you'd have someone other than Nimoy playing Spock, and Shatner would be playing someone other than Kirk. So, I'd think there would be a huge uproar!

I still think the Shat might be in this thing. Wouldn't put it past them to do this type of misdirection then have him pop up in the movie for a quick cameo somehow.:p

Well that is generally true of all large groups, not just trek fandom. There will always be some dissent. Its natural.

To be blunt, I'm not seeing any "uproar" over Shatner not being in the film anyway. Granted that there are people who were hoping that he'd throw hissy fits and they'd get a "National Enquirer" moment out of it... and I got a huge kick of it when he finally did toss a bone to a particularly obnoxious interviewer and got all the "I've hated Shatner ever since SNL" guys all in a tizzy... but overall, the guy is 70 and is still in good health and working steadily... has a great wife, a great home, a great job, a great LIFE... far better than most of ours... and I just don't see the uproar.

Other than in a few threads on one internet BBS, I've seen NOTHIN. And even here, it's more about people pretending that "the fanboys" are in an uproar... while they are in fact AMONG "the fanboys" in the first place. :D
