Yeah, Zerg are fun. 
I think they did a fine job creating both a collective consciousness that also has a very clear hierarchy, with the Overmind representing the sum total and the Cerebrates representing specific, individual drives. They are the only Zerg (aside from Kerrigan) who have true self-awareness. I'm also glad that Kerrigan is still very much a Zerg, and is still evil in some ways. The story for Brood War wouldn't have been as fun if she simply reverted to her old personality when the Overmind died.
