Worth watching SG1 Children of the Gods 2009?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, i've already seen the original and was wondering if it's worth watching the newly released version again? what are the differences between the two?

Redone music and effects, minor edits to change pacing, removal of nude scene, a couple of continuity errors. Got a big "Meh" from me as I absolutely loved the original (non Showtime) version when I saw it on TV in '97 and saw little wrong with it. Still don't. :)

If you remove the "reproductive organs" rant, the comment that the alternate reality Carter says to herself in Moebius part 1 isn't as funny.

"No one would really say that"

I never bothered with the revamped COTG, because I loved the original just as it is (even with Carter's goofy 'reproductive organs' rant).

Don't bother, it's awful.

Half the dialogue is swapped for alternate takes of the same scene, for no reason whatsoever apart from giving the movie enough 'new features' to be able to sell it and make money. The new takes are terrible in comparison and the whole thing just doesn't flow as well. Oh and they messed with the ending.

A pointless money-making scheme, nothing more.

IIRC, Carter's "reproductive organs" rant was also removed ...

In a very sloppy manner. They remove that particular rant, yet keep O'Neill's response to it. The scene basically now goes:

Carter (saluting): "Captain Samantha Carter, reporting for duty."
O'Neill: "Now Captain, this has nothing to do with you being a woman. I like women."

Yeah, I know, it's not exactly like that, but you get my point. O'Neill is now out of the blue mentioning he's not sexist, even though no such accusation is made. It's just sloppy.

The 2009 re-edit is basically just Children of the Gods with all the scenes cut that someone usually fast-forwarded through when they were watching it. Oh and that funky Death Glider variant with rings and is capable of carrying passengers is now replaced with a cargo ship.

If you've seen Children of the Gods a couple hundred times and want a new slant, then by all means, check it out.

It's an interesting case study in "modernizing" an episode, but for all the things it does right it contains what I'd consider to be a fair number of missteps.

Among other things, people who saw the remake followed by "The Enemy Within" would be faced with a real WTF? That was pointless, and I'd always liked the ominous feeling of the original ending.

I do kind of wonder what would happen if someone tried applying the same treatment to, say, Encounter at Farpoint.

I thought it was worth watching only because it fixed the one thing I absolutely hated about the episode, the edited-with-a-hacksaw music score ripped directly from the soundtrack album of the original movie. I thought they had Joel Goldsmith compose an all-new score, but I heard later that he'd done a fully original score in the first place, and studio interference led to it being replaced with stock music from the movie. Either way, it improved the episode immensely for me.

The original will always be fine for me :techman: I have no interest to ever watch the re-make release.

okay, i just saw the re-make and you guys were right. really terrible.

the opening battle sequence is so much better on the original. better music, too.

why couldn't they have just released the original on BR?

The music was good
The continuity fixes worked:
The 'jumbo glider' that ring'ed the snakeheads out to the gate is now a cargo ship (that has always bugged me)

Teal'c voice is redubbed. It's jarring when you consider how DEEP his voice was in later seasons vs the earlier ones... but it fits.

I liked it, but as a curious add-on, not a pilot.

Bit a of a bump, but this is actually the first time I've seen this thread.

I got the DVD pretty cheap when it first came out. It wasn't bad, no worse or better than the original. It is nice to have for completeness reasons and if you want to own all of the Stargate movies (COTG is technically one) on DVD/Blu-Ray.
