Actually, they were found in Chile, rather than in Peru.

Another Chilean mummy has been found, near a landslide.

The oldest mummy was found in the Camarones Valley, about 60 miles south of Arica. It has been dated to c. 5,050 BC.

To put this in perspective, the earliest mummy that has been found in Egypt has been dated to around 3,000 BC, while the oldest mummy recovered from the Atacama Desert is dated around 7,020 BC.

The Atacama Desert extends from a few kilometers south of the Chile-Peru border to about 30 degrees south latitude.

But, the earliest site in South America may be Monte Verde, Chile, dated to as early as 33,000 BC.
