World of Warcraft: Catacylsm?

if Cat remaps all of the old world, that will really make things interesting, flying and such... I cant wait to see it.

To be honest I thought the entire premise was complete and utter fandom bullshit. Then I realized it might be possible then I thought it would be nice to see some of these changes. Then came Blizzcon and it was all true, the good and the bad.

I am hopeful this will be a successful relaunch of the old world but I'm not all giddy with glee either. There are still far too many details left to be seen before I am completely on board with the changes.

I did pick up that for all their years of saying it was never going to happen they'd allow flying in the old world are true, they are redoing it so it's not exactly the old world anymore and it allows them to fix some of their launch mistakes and outdated concepts.

They have stated that virtually everything level 60+ (so Outlands, North Rend) are going to be left untouched. This is all old world revamping and it is needed. I am going to do a Tauren Paladin. It disappoints me there are still no Tauren Rogues but this gives hope for the future.

I think the Tauren Rogue joke is as old as WOW itself. The way I figure it, if an Orc can be a rogue then a Tauren isn't too big a stretch either. At least Dranei can't be rogues either.

there are a lot of changes they've proposed. i'm looking forward to the guild leveling, the simplified stats (though we'll see how long that lasts), the re-tooling of the classes, and the changes to the old world... oh, and the new starting zones, and the new end zones... this should be quite the expansion.

Orc Rogues and Assassins have a basis in lore though. There's Garona Half-Orcen and The Shattered Hand Clan. And they have a bad history of being deceitful, underhanded bastards prior to Thrall taking over. Tauren are too honorable to be sneaky and underhanded IMO. Then again, so are the Orcs for the most part, so you may have a point.

Correct. Along with the Draenei. Most people forget that while the Taurens sided with the Horde, they aren't very...deceitful. They are an honorable class.

While giant warriors seem to propagate their ranks, I've seen relatively normal, human-male-sized Orcs portrayed in Warcraft fiction, and the women are much smaller.

Tauren are all big, unless they are children. They're cows.

I'm not talking about lore, so much as it was originally a joke. But in the context of lore, Blizz themselves have said it is still in the progress of being written. We're living in the current era so that explains why you get Nelf Mages even though past lore said it was forbidden. Things change and if they can adjust classes for a Nelf to become a Mage, it's only a matter of time before you get a Tauren Rogue. Oh, and there's plenty of "deceitful" Tauren around. You fight a number in Stone Talon Mountains, Thousand Needles and Dustwallow Marsh.

Some new info on the Worgen and Goblin intros...

The worgen starting zone actually begins in a flashback. Gilneas is besieged by the Forsaken and gripped with rumors of plague. You meet a dissenter, Crowley, who believes that Gilneas' isolationism is a mistake and that they should rejoin the Alliance. When the worgen curse comes, you and Crowley lead the defensive, but are pushed back to the city cathedral, where you realize that the worgen you are fighting are your own friends and neighbors driven feral. As you realize this, the curse takes you.

Flash forward to some months later, when you're captured in the countryside by your old friend Crowley. From here, the portion we saw at BlizzCon begins.

As for the goblins, you start on Kezan as a pretty high level (society-wise, not game mechanics) executive, successful and rich, with a hot secretary. When Kezan begins to fall apart, you give your life savings to a Trade Prince who promises you safe passage to the mainland. Instead, he captures you and tries to sell into slavery. That's when the shipwreck happens, and again, the story picks up with the BlizzCon portion.

Apparently, the original goblin city, despite only appearing from levels 1-5, is sort of a Grand Theft Auto: Goblin City parody type of setup, full of sleaze and pollution and robot-powered American-style football. But that's not all. Apparently the goblins' brush with slavery and death hasn't wiped out their unique sensibilities and philosophies, as they'll actually reshape Azshara to look like the Horde symbol.

I'm off WoW at the moment, but I can't wait to come back for Cata. :techman:

I've been retired since the summer, but I am absolutely chopping at the bit to return to the game a month or so prior to Catacylsm's release to say good bye to the old world and say hello to the new one.

Yeah, it might not be a bad idea to come back a little early to put things in order, particularly if they're going to do a major event like the Scourge invasion pre-WOTLK.

I still want to know if there's going to be a way to access the "old" old world, as it were, once Cata goes live. I'm excited about all the changes, but I'd still like to be able to visit some of the more memorable places around the world as they used to be. Auberdine, for one.

Nope, once Cataclysm goes live even people who just buy plain World of Warcraft with a level 50 cap will experience the same new 1-50 content as everyone else does. It's near the bottom of the FAQ. The new level 80-85 quests in Azeroth will be phased. Interactions between high level characters and low level ones are definitely going to change, a lot.

Bear in mind that only a few old zones are going to be wholesale changed (like Desolace), there will be a few new ones (like Hyjal), and plenty of your favourite places might be left well enough alone geographically with just a few minor changes. Auberdine, however, won't be one of them as it's slated to be destroyed along with most of Darkshore.

In a way it's not just an expansion, it's WoW2. Theoretically they could continue to upgrade the game and eventually even the game engine forever in this manner, with the entire world undergoing constant change.

I'm hoping whatever comes post-Cataclysm involves the Burning Legion and Outland again, and yes I realize it's a bit premature for that discussion. :)

Only on private servers with pre-Cat builds, which are illegal, as far as Blizzard's concerned.

A good opportunity to see some of the old content will be the Caverns of Time. Perhaps they could come up with a winged dungeon that requires you to go back in time to retrieve several artifacts spread across "old" Azeroth and it could feature several of the zones that got the biggest overhauls such as Darkshore and Aszhara.

Good idea.

I think the crash of the Exodar would be a pretty bad-ass event to tie in to something like that.
