Word 2010 Question: numbering paragraphs

How do I (or can I) number paragraphs in a word document? Specifically, I DON'T want to use the bullet/numbering option, but rather I want small numbers in the margin to indicate the paragraph number for editing/reference purposes, as you would see often in textbooks.

Thanks, I think that's what I want, but I'll have to play with it. I wish that article had show some examples of how the technique looks in a document when used.

 

I expect it will take a little bit of experimentation to get the effect you desire.

Personally, I despise Word as being a bloated, bug-ridden piece of crap that has never been fit for purpose in any of its releases.

 

It doesn't really matter whether it's any good or not, I have to use it.
