Wood or aluminum baseball bats?

Dream

Admiral
Admiral
I'm thinking about getting baseball bat to protect myself in case someone tries to break into my home. I've never swung a baseball bat in my life so I don't know know which bat would be better as a weapon. Is a wood baseball bat better at killing someone or an aluminum?

And if they overpower you and use it on you? Which would you prefer?

Since you've never swung a bat before, the fault wouldn't be in the material of the bat but the inexperience of the swinger.

Are you trying to build up some kind of arsenal here?

Will you next ask us what type of explosive is best for instituting a scorched-earth policy once the government inevitably comes for your precious bodily fluids?

Firstly, how does a guy live in the United States and go their entire life without ever swinging a baseball bat or at least knowing how it's done?

A baseball bat is nice and simple. One swing at the back of the head right? Cheap too.

Secondly, your goal seem to be to kill the burglar as they're running away, which would probably get you tried for at least manslaughter in most jurisdictions, though perhaps not ones where you can grow up without ever swinging a baseball bat. So good luck with that.

Weapons for self-defense should be used to deter first, and failing that, injure or kill as a last resort, not the first resort. If you're getting something with the express intent to kill first, you're not trustworthy or responsible enough to own a weapon.

A dog might be more intimidating to a burglar than a nerd (which we all are by default on this board) with a weapon they don't know how to use. Failing that, how about that Predator plastic gizmo that was demonstrated on The Men Who Stare at Goats.

Prevention is the best remedy. I suggest land mines.

But land mines require permits and training and then the human rights nuts get involved. It's all such a drag. I'd rather just kill someone with a lawn dart or something simple like that.

The best defence is a good offence. Break into the burglar's house and swing the baseball bat at them while they are sleeping!

You see Simba, the hyenas try and jack our shit, so we roll up on the hyena's crib and blast those motherfuckers first so they know what's up. It's all part of the great circle of life.

I don't know if a baseball bat is the ideal instrument for your purposes; I think a wooden bat can break (the human head is hard) and aren't metal bats hollow inside because of weight? If you're looking for a blunt instrument to murder somebody, I would suggest a stick of thick rebar looks promising.

I'd go for aluminum. You need quite a bit of force to knock someone down, and you risk splintering the wooden one.

I have guns, knives, bats, hammers and other tools within reach... plus extensive training (government sponsored!) on how to kill people.

Outside of one incident while on duty I thankfully have never had to use any of it.

The odds of you being involved in an incident... are slim. Very slim. Most of us go our entire lives without a break-in or mugging attempt. Do you REALLY need to worry about having a weapon handy or is your paranoia part of a larger issue?
