Wolverine and the X-Men DVDs...looks like it's "Volume Issue"...

That link doesn't say there will never be a season set. Clone Wars has done two "volume" releases so far but they say they'll do a season set later. Spec Spidey did volumes but is releasing a season set on July 28th. I certainly hope so 'cause I'm waiting for the season set to watch this show!

The volume format is pretty much the standard for animated series; it's their way of hitting up parents who buy these for their kids on a one-off basis before the season sets for the hardcore fans.

I think the "Volumes" releases work better for Spectacular Spiderman since the entire series is a set of mini-arcs (though arguably Norman Osborn is the core villain of the entire show) and each volume contains a complete arc. Though the series set is more desirable.

The volumes for Spec Spider-Man (I've only seen the first) seemed cool due to the arc based format...but I still like an entire season set.

That first volume is already out on R2. Think I might wait and see if there's gonna be a Season set though before investing

I pointed this out ove at Toonzone's Marvel Animation Forum, so I might as well say it here too.

There's a nasty little Catch-22 involved in that strategy. The market (at least in the US) prefers season sets as a rule. Studioes should KNOW this by now. However, if a Volume fails to sell well (and not just overall but IN STORES as opposed to the 'net), they draw the "logical conclusion" that there is no interest in the project.

This I have learned may be a major contributing factor to why WB has refused to release S4 of X-Men: Evo. Though S3s Net sales were very good indeed, it sold poorly in stores.

Is this why Season Two of Legion of Super Heroes never came out on DVD? I missed the goddamn final episode and now I can never see it!

I personally would think that Legion would have a BETTER shot at getting a full release, since it's a DC property and WB is DCs parent company.

I've often suspected that WB's weird attitude about Evo stemmed in no small part from it being a Marvel product.

I doubt that. The WB as a whole could probably care less about the dynamics of their comics company (which is valuable primarily as intellectual property) versus somebody else's, if they stand to make money off of it.

Let me put it this way to clarify:

YOU are WB. You have ONE slot to fill with a DVD set. You have two choices of program. Same genre, same length, same everything. You even expect that they will sell ~ the same number of units.

One of them belongs to another company entirely, which will demand license money. Thus you make less profit.

The other belongs to YOUR company. ALL the profit "stays in the family".

Which one would YOU choose, knowing you have to answer to shareholders for it?
