With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Ripper?

Vamps seem to have enjoyed a renaissance in pop culture at the moment, what with the Stephanie Meyer books and Alan Ball's 'True Blood' series. So, doesn't it seem the perfect time to finally make Joss Whedon's long-touted 'Ripper' spin off? Strike while the iron's hot, and make it now before ASH is too old.
I personally don't care much for Twilight. Buffy and Angel were miles better. Come on Joss, where's Ripper?

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

You know, if we're jumping on bandwagons, why the hell not a 'Ripper' show after all this time, assuming the project's not dead?

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

Very good suggestion Praetor. Very original. Hardly see how the OP overlooked that one. Another possibility would be Joss Whedon's "Ripper".:p

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

Poor Whedon is jumping on last seasons bandwagon with Dollhouse this Friday - sci fi "lite" with cops - maybe when that show goes belly up he can scramble onto the vampire bandwagon before it, too, runs out of gas.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

The project was announced back in 2001 during BTVS's fifth season.

Despite the passage of time, if the BBC can finally decide to make more Red Dwarf (they have!), surely it isn't too late? Anthony Head still wants to do it. I suspect the problem is still money.

It's a shame that Whedon, once the trend setter, is now sadly a bandwagon jumper.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

Anthony Head is currently doing Merlin and with Joss doing Dollhouse it might be difficult to get all of the schedules lined up. I don't think Fox or the CW would go for it (The CW's dedication to the teen and young adult demogrphic pretty much prevents them from having any series starring a 54 year old man unless he's playing a 14 year old high school student), though the BBC or ITV might (Certainly, it would be better than ITV's ghastly Demons).

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

given what Demons turned out to be, I dont think we should let ITV anywhere never Ripper

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

I though damned vampires have been in vogue for a few years now? Or was it zombies. Whatever same thing.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

We shall see how Dollhouse goes. If it tanks, then Joss will be free to do it.

I thought in 2004 that we hadn't seen the last of the Slayerverse. Sadly, now, it seems that it is too late for it to come back.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

^Yeah, they did. After Angel got the axe in '04, I don't recall them being in the limelight for a few years. Now, it seems, they are back in favour.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

Ok that would only be a few years.

But I seem to recall seeing two decently sized hit Underworld films.
And enjoyed them.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

^Yup, then again leather clad Kate Beckinsale and Rhona Mitra could have had something to do with that. :techman:

Its a pity Castlevania the Movie got axed, that could have been a pretty good mainstream hit for the Vampire genre, god knows it would have better better than Twatlight.

Except for MOONLIGHT and BLOOD TIES and UNDERWORLD and ULTRAVIOLET and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT and the recent BBC remake of DRACULA and racks and racks and racks of bestselling vampire romance novels . . . .

Trust me, vampires never go away.

While I agree in principle, do you really think they could have done justice to a Castlevania movie?

One word: Bloodrayne. :scream:

Well...true. I see your point. Vamps don't ever really go away.

Maybe what I was trying to say was 'Joss Whedon' vamps seem to have gone away. I was expecting them to make a comeback at some point, either on TV or at the movies, but sadly, all of the cast have moved on, and James Marsters won't be able to convincingly play an ageless vampire forever.

Re: With vampires seemingly 'back' (Twilight, True Blood), where's Rip

I recently got some of the old Hammer Horror vampire movies. The ones that were based on Le Fanu's "Carmilla" would be great fun to see remade.

The first guy they hired? no. But they were set to bring in a new production team and start the film at last then the studio suddenly shelved it.

@Gov: I have all of Hammer's Vampire movies on DVD and two editions of Carmilla's original print, I would love to see a big screen adaptation of Carmilla...that wasn't some trashy lesbian Vampire b-movie.
