Wireless Routers?

Chick_McGeester

Hey guys, Im looking for a good wireless router. I am kinda partial to Linksys. I want to get one that can do the fastest speeds...I think the best ones say up to 300 mbps.
Problem is I dont want to buy one that looks good to me and find out its last years model.
Anyone got any ideas?

well, Cisco-Linksys make 600mbps ones . . . pretty much all the other brands do too
personally I'd go with whatever is close to what my ISP can shove down the tubes
I'm on Timewarner and my old 54mbps G band Netgear works just fine . . .
Timewarner sucks though . . . I never seem to get much over 1.5mbps

Wireless routers do not advance all that quickly. "Last year's model" will be plenty sufficient, especially if it costs half as much as this year's model.

This one looks pretty good (and it's a LinkSys) and supports 802.11n, which is the most current wireless standard.

I had a LinkSys router once, but I didn't have very good luck with it. I wouldn't recommend them.

The reason I like the Apple router is because it's easiest to configure and update (you can do it from a dedicated utility).

most routers are easy to configure and update . . . just go to the router's IP in your browser and the control panel pops up . . .

^ But you actually have to have an active connection to do that. With most routers, you have to run a cable from the computer to the router, in order to do the initial configuration. Apple's AirPort Utility automatically detects any of its routers within range so you don't have to hook up any cables.

So you had one LinkSys router at one time and you'd write off the whole brand based on a single bad experience?

I've used many LinkSys products over many years and can vouch for them as generally rock-solid, budget-friendly, and easy to configure and use.

I do NOT recommend D-Link routers. When I bought my last computer, I had trouble with the router not recognizing it. After following all the instruction, to no avail, and going to their website, I discovered no support for their wireless router. When I called D-Link they wanted to charge me $99.00US to walk me through hooking up my $49.99US router. I shall not purchase anything from them again.

I'll be following this thread for ideas on my next wireless router purchase.

I do have a Mac. But I run both Mac and Windows. I do like the Mac "Airport Extreme Base Station" but I dont like that it costs 3 times a normal one.
Right now I have a Modem that I rent from my internet provider. The best case for me would be to buy my own modem and router or an all in one. I looked at the or "Airport Extreme" thing and it still needs a modem. Im not paying 179 if I still have to but a 50-75 dollar modem...

^ You could try the AirPort Express. It's cheaper. It's got most of the wireless functionality of the Extreme, but not the wired ports.

That still isnt a modem. So I have to say no way to that overpriced apple shit. I mean I love their computers and all but the price for either the Extreme or the Express are pretty ridiculous.
So then Im probably looking at a linksys router and then later I can get a modem and save 6 bucks a month renting one. But for now I need a good wireless router.
