Wipeout HD

Rii

Rear Admiral
It may be "only" a PSN release, but Wipeout HD has been one of my most anticipated games since it was first announced some thirteen years ago. The updated Zone Mode in particular looks phenomenal.

My favourite futuristic racer/combat racer to date is F-Zero GX from Sega and Nintendo, with Acclaim's XG3, Sony Liverpool's Wipeout Pure, and LucasArts' Episode One: Racer also ranking up there. I don't know if Wipeout HD can knock F-Zero GX off its perch, but it'll certainly give it a run for it's money.

Is anyone else picking this up next week? My PSN handle is Aurek7 if anyone's interested, I'll likely be sticking with Assegai, maybe AG Systems also. :)

Too Human was in development for like 10 years. It was originally going to be for the PS1 and on four discs.

^As in Duke Nukem (Takes) Forever ? It was announced in 1997, so I doubt it.

You can't spend much more than two years on a video game. Technology moves on much too fast for that.

first announced some thirteen years ago.

That's a long development cycle.

I may have made that up.

It was meant to have been released ages ago, that's all. Apparently the delays have resulted in a better feature set though, split-screen multiplayer and such, so I can't really hold it against them.

Considering Sony owns the developer, no.

Ya, there was a Wipeout game on N64, but that was before Sony bought Psygnosis.

EDIT: Actually, that isn't true. Sony acquired Psygnosis several years prior to the release of Wipeout 64.

I'm a Wipeout junkie so unless they really went in the wrong direction, this is another must-buy for me.

Thank goodness for PSN, otherwise I'd never play games on my PS3.

Do barrel rolls count as a wrong direction?

One feature I'd love to see Wipeout incorporate from XG3 is the sonic boom effect as the vehicle accelerates beyond Mach 1. That and the part upgrade system were the best features of that game.

I remember a lot of people complaining when Fusion did the upgrades thing, but I've never played XG3 so the two mechanics are probably very different for all I know.

...personally, I loved Fusion. Sure, maybe it was no XL/2097, but damn was it fun.

Anyway, about HD, this is still my only real must-have on the PS3. I love Wipeout to death, but I need at least two more. Too bad Psygnosis was swallowed by Sony before Microsoft stumbled onto the scene.

Sorta off-topic, but did the rights to Colony Wars go to Sony as well? A new one of those would be a sight to see.

A new Colony Wars game would be great, but that series seems to have died with the PS1. Now all we have are crapfests like Project Sylpheed and a slew of generic, interchangeable shooters.

I'm not sure why the Colony Wars genre died so quickly, but I would love to see it make a comeback with today's consoles.

Both this and Burnout hit the same day, which is odd. I'll be getting Wipeout though, will have to push my Paradise purchase back again.

Whereas I never played Fusion, so we're both in the dark.

For what it's worth Studio Liverpool is apparently working on a "real" Wipeout title for PS3 also, with Wipeout HD being to said title as GTHD/GT5P is to GT5. The last word on that came alongside the announcement of Wipeout HD though, so it's entirely possible, particularly in light of the delays to Wipeout HD and its expanded feature set from the original announcement, that plans have changed since then.

Personally, beyond Wipeout HD the upcoming PS3 exclusives I'm most interested in are Flower, LittleBigPlanet, and Heavy Rain. :)

It's up on PSN, unfortunately I won't have a chance to play it till tomorrow. :(

I am downloading it at the moment. This and the trophy patch for Burnout Paradise should keep me busy for a while.
