WIP: Pre- Miranda Variant; Excelsior Class Kitbash

Patrickivan

Fleet Captain
Newbie
These two models have been sitting in moth balls for about 10 years. It was time to start working on them again.

The Miranda variant, ready for work. Next post will have new warp support struts, and body work. The saucer is from the old Enterprise, D-9, Bird of Prey Kit.

Sorry about the sub-standard pics. I think I have to up the res on the ole camera for the next batch of pics.

Here are some updates. Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture if my life depended on it.

Here are the new warp nacelles for the Excelsior variant. The main body is made from a highlighter. The end caps are made from, well, pen caps. There are a lot of funky pens out there!

The Miranda variant now has her warp nacelles and support struts. I will be putting a sensor or weapons pod below the ship. I can't decide yet.

So, if anyone has any ideas on what I should do, feel free. I know this is your everyday ship build, but it's fun.

PatrickIvan - I am liking your take on both the Excelsior variant and the TOS Miranda.

One thing that might help us get a better feel for your request on ideas might be to give us some different views for both. We have a top aand bottom (dorsal and ventral) view, but not a fore and aft view or a side view. Adding those might help. Also, given the scale of the models (I am assuming these are in the 1/2500 range), if you could make the pictures bigger, that might help as well (I don't know if you are able to do that or not, just offering the suggestion).

Otherwise, I think you are on the right track and I am looking forward to seeing the finished products.

I'm going to try to borrow a better camera. I can't seem to get good res on this thing, and the more I enlarge, the lower the res...

Thanks for the tips. I'll have the scale information and some specs for the ships on tonights update.

Here are some more grainy, blurry, ships.

The warp nacelles have been secured to the Excelsior variant. The endcaps won't be put on until I paint her- which will be in a couple of days. The Excelsior variant is a complete imaginary class that I can't justify to fit in the Star Trek universe. It has too much of an Enterprise E look to it- and though when I started the ship, it was before the E-E came out, it looks too much like it to fit in the time period of the Excelsior design.

When I decided to chop the neck down on this ship, and was to make it look a little more sleek. I wanted round cylindrical warp nacelles because they just looked prettier to me. I intentionally reduced the size of the impulse deck because I thought the Excelsior's was too bloody large. I increased the size of the shuttle bay, and reduced the overall length of the engineering hull simply to make it more proportional to the saucer. I also added a shuttle bay just aft of the bridge, and forward of the impulse engines.

The Miranda variant now has a weapons/ sensor pod slung below. I've taken into consideration the planetary sensor. This ship will be primed for paint tomorrow.

Like other people, I wanted to make a pre-Miranda class version. I took my Enterprise from the Enterprise/ Bird of Prey/ D-7 Ertl kit, and chopped up the saucer, and made up the rest of the hull with styrene sheets. I wanted nacelle support struts that looked a little more modern, so used some wings from a Gundam kit to make the struts for the nacelles and for the sensor/ weapons pod on the underside. The pod is made from a funky pen cap.
