Windows Vista Problem...

Bigfix could be a problem. Like Automatic Updates does at times, it could be dragging the system down calling home.

Also, if memory is an issue, turn off all the bells and whistles and see what happens. Disable Aero, the sidebar, all visual effects, use classic start menu and folders, etc.

Okay, some updates.

I thought I was running SP1, but I am not. I tried downloading it and got an error. It said to go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkld=1011309 to learn more. There is no such site.

At this point, I need to figure out how to transfer all my files somewhere else. Can I create another drive on the system to accomplish this; transferring the files to, say, a self-created K drive, and then do the install and transfer my files back? I don't trust burning them to a CD, and I don't have a jumpdrive big enough.

BTW, I did disable Aero... that helped the speed.

I'd really like to get this taken care of tonight, as I am now on vacation for a few weeks, and have some games to play and stuff to get done... perferrably without computer problems!

I think you can download SP1 for Vista from another source with no problems.
Installing it also shouldn't present an issue since I did so on my sisters computer and nothing went wrong.

To my knowledge, Vista allows you to re-size an existing partition:

When you are done resizing an existing partition, click on the empty space you set aside and assign it a new drive letter
