William Shatner Confirms Talks for Star Trek Return at 93 Years Old

He shouldn't have died at all.
On that I could agree. But according to Shatner they were killing off Kirk with or without him.

Which is where he was when Soran shot him in the back originally. The reshot scene is far more heroic and active for Kirk.
I wonder why Han's death doesn't seem to brush up against people the way Kirk's does.

If Shatner hadn't participated, I wonder how they would have killed him off. At that point, I can't see the audiences accepting someone who wasn't Shatner as Kirk.

If I were still into Star wars, I would have hated that. But we all knew Harrison Ford wanted to kill off Han at the end of the second Star Wars movie.

My guess is that he would have been killed off screen. Have some mention of him dying on the Enterprise-B saving the ship from the energy ribbon.

Doubtful they’d have even done that. No point in mentioning a character they couldn’t use in the movie that would have no dramatic influence on the story…

That’s how we get something like Antonia.

Unlikely since they came pretty close to killing Spock off off-screen in Face of the Enemy until they realised they just couldn't kill off a huge character with a throwaway line of dialogue. So it is doubtful they would then go and do it.

Plus the whole film would need a new title without an intergenerational crossover and then what Picard just leaves the Nexus on his own and stops Soren just because he has the advantage of it being a replay?

Everyone has to die at some point and Kirk withering away at a ripe old age seems less in character
Leaving his fate unknown would have allowed for anything. Let his ultimate fate be a mystery. Same with Spock, Sulu, Chekhov, etc. It was good enough for Scotty.

I would have been completely fine if I never saw the TOS crew again after TUC. Just like I would have been fine never seeing the TNG crew again after 'All Good Things...'

Sometimes things should just be left to the audience's imagination.

Totally agree. They told their story. Time for new folks.

Unfortunately, they kind of tried that with Kurtzman-era shows, starting with DSC - with the exception of PIC - most with new characters. Every show seemed to end a bit too soon, even SNW, which is arguably one of the recent favorites.

IIRC, back during the days of Berman-era Trek, the highest-rated shows set in the 24th century seemed to contain cameo appearances by TOS characters, back when they were still (relatively) young enough to reprise their roles. The abomination that was ENT's TATV was the one notable exception to that rule. In most cases, nostalgia always seemed to be a winning formula, but only when taken in small doses. They tried turning it up to 11 with PIC and it didn't do too well. Prodigy, IMO was generally better-written than PIC, but suffered too much disdain for being unfairly minimalized as a "kiddie cartoon" to ever get traction with the fandom.

I am unsure of the future of Trek, and maybe it needs to take another similar post-ENT hiatus for a few years, which looks exactly like what's going to happen under Paramount's new leadership. Once SNW is done, I don't really see anything substantive getting made, and once Taylor Sheridan's contract ends and he moves over to, what was it, NBC? in a couple of years, what will they have left to stream that draw a huge audience like that? Someone better start getting their shit together right-ricky-tick and start building a minimum 5-year roadmap. That shit's going to catch up to them soon.

I understand your points and don't disagree, but Shatner said if he didn't do the movie they were going to kill him off anyway. So it seems there was an intention by Berman to sweep the old Trek movies under the rug so that TNG could move forward on it's own.

I’m curious to know exactly how Paramount would have killed off Kirk if Shatner didn’t participate in the film. Just say he died off-screen? The entire point of Generations was to bring Kirk and Picard together in the most convoluted way possible. If Shatner didn’t participate, then how would they even have made the movie?

They wouldn't have.

It was probably a bluff by the producers since film would have needed a pretty severe re-write

They wouldn't have written it though without locking Shatner in first.
You would hope. But Picard season 3 had no back up plan without the whole TNG cast. And the 4th Kelvin film that never happened got announced with all cast returning which came as a surprise to the cast.
