Will WoW affect James Bond?

As some of you may know, World of Warcraft is releasing it's next big expansion on thursday. The game has an advertised base of 11million players. The question being, is there enough crossover in customer base that the release of the WoW expansion will hurt the opening weekend numbers of Quantum of Solace?
If so, this will be the first time the release of a video game has affected the opening weekend of a major motion picture.

Iron Man (I think) and GTA IV were out the same weekend, there wasn't a problem then. Can't see this being any different really.

While I'm sure some people will be playing WoW instead of going out to see the new James Bond movie I doubt there will be a huge noticeable drop in box office.

Different target audience.

Besides, I doubt there are fans of both who know they can't take a couple of hours to go see a movie then come home and go ballistic on WoW.

Different? are you sure? because everyone I know is a big fan of the movies and the game. It seems to me there is more of a build up with the game to be "first" in regards to advancing through the new content. There will even be midnight store openings to purchase the expansion. I could easily see people deciding they would rather get in more game time early on and putting off the movie for later.

"Everyone you know" isn't in any way representative of the general population, who either don't care about WoW or don't even know what it is. Nothing personal, but WoW is going to have near zero impact on the new movie.

Weren't people wondering the same thing about GTA4 and some movie earlier this year? And it turned out to have a minimal effect. I think it was GTA4...

I have to disagree, I would imagine that many people who play WoW are interested in the new Bond film.

Of course WoW players are only a small portion of the overall movie going public.

And 11 million players deciding to stay home to play a game instead of see a movie would bother me as a studio exec.

Have to remember not all of WoW's subscriber base is in the US you have a couple million in Europe, a couple million in the US and the rest in Asian markets, imagine 6 million Chinese gold farmers!

QFT.

American is NOT the centre of the world. It has already been breaking record all across the world and I highly doubt some nerds who never go outside to see the light of day would've even bothered seeing the James Bond movie.

I am still on the fence about Wrath of the Lich King, but I am starting to lean toward retiring permanently from World of Warcraft. I have a lot of fond memories but it may be time for me to move on, the time sink is just not as appealing as it once was and I have trouble keeping up with my friends, and I hate being the guy in green and blue gear next to them in their spiffy epics.....Either way though, I wouldn't miss opening night of a Bond flick for it.

Christ, dude, get them to run you through Kara once and bye-bye to those greens....

I've got a 70 lock with nothing but purple and T4 gear. By no means close to top of the game, but I picked up most of it within my first few runs of Kara and then ZA. I've only got about 20 days total playing time on my character, which is less than 500 hours. I've only been playing a few hours a day for a few months on this character (used to play pre-BC but quit for a couple of years).

And people who do nothing but play WoW are in the minority, even amongst the "hard-core". Most people I know raid only 3-4 nights a week and don't even play on weekends except for a few hours here and there farming loot or drops. They go to parties, have jobs, wives, girlfriends and boyfriends, go to school, go to movies, even play other videogames. There are plenty of retards with no life but WoW, but I'd wager it's a pretty insignificant portion of the population. They will pick up the expansion thursday, play it for two days straight and take a break Saturday or Sunday to go see a movie just like anyone else would.

Halo 3, GTA4, WOTLK..... these are games people put many hours into, it will still be there after taking three hours out of their lives to see a movie. And people aren't that broke either, these aren't all 14 year old kids parsing out their allowances, they are adults who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a year on various forms of entertainment, just like most people do.

Well, the expansion comes out on Thursday. You have to figure that it could be Friday when things get up and running then you will have so many people trying to get in. I am sure that will turn off a lot of people myself included. It usually takes about a week to get everything running smoothly after a big game update like this.

I am interested to see what the expansion will have to do but I am in no rush to see it all and do it like some people. I know that there are some really obsessive people who will not be able to rest well until they get their character to 80.

Anyway, I do not think it will have any major impact on the movie. If people really want to go see it, they will take the 2 hours out of playing WoW to go.

If you were as studio exec (which you aren't), you'd realise that a fair few PC gamers don't pay for anything they can get from BitTorrent, and would therefore not be attending the film's opening weekend anyway - WoTLK or no WoTLK. Why bother when you can download someone's handycam footage?
