I like the 43 years of canon and would love for that to continue, it gives Star Trek a depth that other programmes do not have; unforunately I don't think we'll see what I am calling the Real Star Trek again.
That's old Star Trek's strength but also its weakness. The problem is that whenever you get a complicated mythology like you have with Star Trek, you are very limited in what you can do if you want to maintain consistency. For example, you could never see how Kirk and co would deal with the Ferengi because Ferengis weren't discovered until the TNG era. This new movie makes new stories possible that simply couldn't exist before.I like the 43 years of canon and would love for that to continue, it gives Star Trek a depth that other programmes do not have; unforunately I don't think we'll see what I am calling the Real Star Trek again.
Some of the best stories can no longer happen in the new timeline. Amok Time, and Journey To Babel being two examples.I think you can see the old universe in books, comics, etc. Besides, the time line may be changed, but who is to say the stories will not be better in the changed timeline???
