Will we ever have a decent Egypt or Dinosaur story?

Dinosauricon

Lieutenant
The Doctor's faced Dinosaurs before-in Invasion of the Dinosaurs, the second serial from Jon Pertwee's final season. But they were represented by really, really bad puppets. The Doctor of course returned to prehistoric times in Earthshock and Time Flight, but there were no dinosaurs in sight (Apart from the fossil in ES).

As for Egypt, the Doctor went there in the Dalek's masterplan but he was only there for a brief episode and once again the budget let things down. However, we did have a classic serial with an Egyptian theme, Pyramids Of Mars, although the majority of the story is set in a English mansion which would be the foundation of UNIT HQ.

Given that BBC Dinosaur FX have improved (Walking with Dinosaurs and Primeval, as well as the Pteranodon in Torchwood) should WHO ever try a Dinosaur story? Or an ancient Egypt story?

well now that Primeval has been axed, and that Dinosaur CGI is good enough on TV, there is no reason we wont see one in say S6, let people forget about Primeval first.

There are lots of stories I would like to see Doctor Who tackle. Among them...
  • Vikings
  • The American Revolution
  • The Wild West
  • World War I
  • King Arthur (the historical one)

But I'd take ancient Egypt, too. Considering I set part of "The Spindle of Necessity" there, I have some affinity for the place. :)

We did get Vikings in The Time Meddler, and to a lesser degree, The Curse of Fenric was built on Viking mythology.

Of course the Wild West was tackled in the infamous "Gunfighters" :)

One of the rumors about Stephen Fry's script was that it involved Vikings.

Of course, it was also rumored to involve King Arthur. Or World War I.

I don't think anyone really knows what Stephen Fry's script would have involved.

The DWM series two companion, which I suspect does know what it's talking about, said that Fry's script was set in the 1920s and concerned a popular British legend which turns out to have an extraterrestrial connection.

Pity we never got to see his script filmed.

Anyways, I actually like Invasion of the Dinosaurs except for the rubbish SFX and The Doctor's archaic view towards dinosaurs (which he continues to hold in Earthshock, unfortunately). If nothing else, it continues the interesting character arc for Mike Yates as set up in The Green Death.

That being said, I would love to see The Doctor go back to ancient times and visit dinosaurs, even if briefly in the episode.

As for Egypt, I love The Pyramids of Mars, but again I would love to see The Doctor travel to ancient times and visit that incredible civilization. Or the Mayans. Or Incans. Or Aztecs. Or Olmecs. Or...well, you get the point.

Quite true. I want him to visit them again! :p

I think it would be interesting for The Doctor to visit that particular village and encounter Cameca once again. Especially in light of the whole Rose Tyler silliness. I found The Doctor/Cameca relationship far more believable and touching than The Doctor/Rose relationship. Pity Margot Van der Burgh passed away last summer. :(

I would surely like to see a Doctor Who episode where he travels to the dinosaur era if they could really do it justice. But short of a multi-million-pound budget a la Jurassic Park, I just don't see how they could do the concept justice on a TV budget.

welll Primeval has shown that dinosaurs can be done on a TV budget, but yeah it wont be as good as Jurassic Park, but it is doable.

Besides as someone said to me before, if the Classic series, didnt do something because it would look bad, we would never have had Doctor Who

That doesn't mean that the current series should repeat the original series's mistakes. DW TOS often had rather unemotional writing, too -- that doesn't mean Moffat should abandon emotionalism when he takes over as showrunner.

I haven't seen Primeval and don't know how strong its effects were. But if Doctor Who can't do justice to a concept on its budget, it probably shouldn't do it.

I confess I am not sure which show has the bigger budget, but going by the larger cast of Primeval, im sure Doctor Who spends more on its CGI than Primeval did,

I really don't think that that level of CGI does justice to the concept.

to be fair Primeval was a mixed bag when it came to CGI, but the quality of YouTube videos never helps matters.

There are plenty of emotional moments in the classic series.

For example, one from each Doctor

-The Doctor's relationship with Cameca (The Aztecs)

-The Doctor's speech to Victoria about her father's death (Tomb of the Cybermen)

-The Doctor's sadness over Jo getting married (The Green Death)

-Sarah Jane's initial farewell. (The Hand of Fear)

-The Fifth Doctor's sacrifice (Caves of Androzani)

-The Sixth Doctor's condemnation of the Time Lords (Trial of a Time Lord)

-Ace realizing the baby she saved is in fact her abusive mother (Curse of Fenric)

A handful of individual emotional moments does not make for a regular pattern of emotional writing, especially on a show that lasted for over a quarter of a century.

Even Steven Moffat and Paul Cornell have commented that DW TOS was rather unemotional, arguing that the larger and more persistent amount of emotional content in the current series is one of the things that sets it apart from DW TOS.

and to be fair, the second clip was from the season 1 finale and the effects got better.
