Will Tilly ever develop as a character?

eschaton

In the first season of Discovery, TIlly was hands down my favorite character. She was a breath of fresh air as a somewhat "lighthearted" character in a perpetual dour season. Her character did veer pretty widely in the early episodes as they tried to figure her out (from her initial introduction as someone who seemed borderline ASD, to being a flirt by Magic to Make The Sanest Man Go Mad) but overall, she was a great example of how to play characters to their strengths in an ensemble cast.

I felt like Season 2 was a big step backwards for her to be honest. The whole "command training" subplot was pretty quickly dropped. I wonder if she was a favorite of Berg and Harberts, because in the back half of the season she was really reduced in role - even not appearing in one episode. With so much of that season relying on Michael's relationship with Spock and Pike, there simply wasn't much time for her as Burnham's BFF, so she was more or less relegated to scenes with Stamets in the Spore Drive.

So far, Tilly is getting a pretty wide set of characters to interact to. She's been paired with Michael and Stamets again. She's being more frequently paired with Saru, which I find interesting because due to her low rank she really shouldn't be Saru's confidant (though I can excuse this because I presume there are a lot of interactions with people like Rhys and Detmer off camera).

What bothers me though is there's really no sense of forward movement to Tilly. She's still just a perpetually awkward ensign used for comic relief. Something - anything, would be helpful in order to avoid her being "Harry Kimed." Some possibilities include:
  • Promotion to Lt. Junior Grade. Obviously this is just a change in title, not a change in character, but a whole arc could be put together to get her there.
  • Some sort of romantic/relationship development. Similar to my issue with Saru to be honest, although we know from comments in the first season that Tilly is attracted to men. I think the comments that people make about Mary Wiseman's weight are usually scuzzy, but I feel it's important in terms of inclusion to let women of all sizes be seen as sexual beings with their own wants and needs - and not restricting it to the "hot" cast.
  • Talking with Culber about some of her many insecurities. We now know Culber can serve as a counselor in a pinch. And similar to Neelix, Tilly is a friggin mess under the surface, with a crippling inferiority complex.
  • Being put in a situation where the ship/cast is in danger, and her unique skillset actually saves the day, which helps to build her confidence up.
  • Maybe take Adira under her wing a bit to show the ropes? Tilly isn't a fresh-faced kid any longer, and the juxtaposition of her mentoring someone younger and greener would help her to realize how much she has grown.

I really disagree that Tilly hasn't grown, but I think we might be seeing a slight regression in some of her behaviours on account of her own PTSD.

In terms of Tilly's growth, she has been assertive on a number of occasions this season and I think her truest sign of growth was putting the needs of the crew and their relationship to Starfleet above her friendship to Burnham. Season 1 tilly would not have done that.

I agree with you wanting a romantic relationship for Tilly. I actually thought Tilly had great chemistry with Cal before he was murdered. I would have liked it if Cal had survived and joined the Disco crew as a love interest for Tilly.

Two nice scenes with Saru and Tilly (walking to the saloon earlier and the discussion re. MB this past ep) have been cool. An ongoing mentoring relationship is a nice touch. If she weren't still an ensign, I'd predict she'd be the next XO.

Anything to make her less annoying. Has she gotten less this year? Maybe. It seemed like she got worse last year. She is like Jar Jar Binks, for me. I know I USED to write about MB's tearing up too much, but I would take a scene with her over Tilly any day, week, month, or year.

I feel like Saru has taken Tilly under his swaying arms this season. And she's already shown that she is siding with Starfleet over Michael's antics. And she's been toned way down as the wide-eyed and awkward ensign.

I know I'm one of the people who have been complaining that she was sidelined during the middle of Season 2, but she already had a triumphant return in Such Sweet Sorrow. Saving the ship with her unique skillset? She already did that right before they crossed over.

And she did have character development. The first two seasons were the groundwork with her opening up to her crewmates that allowed her to be in a supporting environment that facilitates her further growth. She's been steadily growing more assertive this year. I can't see Season 1 Tilly sternly criticizing Stamets and Detmer at the dinner table, lifting Saru's spirits after that dinner or giving the same advice she gave to Saru about Burnham going AWOL.

Also, in previous seasons, it was mainly Stamets who tried to mentor her, but it was mostly just him berating her whenever he was frustrated with her, and the advice he had given could actually set her back. "Use less words", yes, by all means, take a person with what looks like social anxiety who starts babbling whenever they're nervous and make them self-conscious about that. This year, Saru took her under his wings instead and instantly demonstrated he could handle and mentor her far better.

That being said, I'm not sure she's going in a direction I'd prefer for her, growing into the captain she wants to be, as I'm still convinced her wish to become a captain is mostly fueled by her internalized need to make her unpleasable mother proud. But she is growing, there's no questioning that. And speaking of narcissistic parents, her unresolved parental issues are one of the main reasons I don't think a romantic relationship would be good for her right now. Any relationship she could find would be merely a projection of her unresolved need for parental approval, be it unrequited yearning or staying in an emotionally abusive relationship simply because it feels familiar. Not to mention, I generally feel romantic plots are quite poor substitutes for character development, especially for female characters. Tilly needs to find her strength and confidence on her own, which is exactly what she's been doing. She definitely doesn't need a man (or a woman, for that matter) to facilitate her growth.
