Will there be a Star Trek IV?

Do you think this will do well enough to merit a fourth film? I've heard projections are lighter than the first two movies. Also, money that could've went to making the movie prettier went to Pine and Quinto because they re-negotiated for more money. Went from $1.5 million in the second movie to $6 million in this one when it was only supposed to be $3M but they argued seven years had elapsed and they could get new contracts, blah blah. Seems a bit high considering the movies are only modestly profitable.

Beyond will get better word of mouth than the last one, that's for sure.

If Justin Lin directs, and Karl Urban gets to play Bones, count me in for Trek IV.

Depends entirely on how well Beyond does. This is supposed to be the biggest Trek ever internationally, we'll see if the numbers are enough to offset a possible disappointing US performance (where everything not named Deadpool or Captain America has performed below expectations)

Way too soon to really say, but if ST3 does well, then yeah, I'd say there would be a Star Trek 4.

if beyond goes well, it's plausible they make at least one more
Pegg seems to be confident they'll get more movies, but I sure hope they didn't end this one with loose ends or cliffhangers. I hope the ending is satisfying for all the characters in a way where, if this movie has to be the end of the trilogy, it would be ok and you don't necessarily need a fourth movie to fix some things.

As someone for whom the whole cast dynamic is something that I adore, I'm somewhat dubious about them going ahead with more movies without Anton Yelchin. Of course, they can.... but it would feel like something is really missing to me, you know? :(

But I'm conflicted, because I really *really* enjoy these new movies, and would love to see more.

Yes.

Of course, Paramount spent a couple of decades making oldTrek movies that were only moderately profitable.

Really ? Apart from Quinto and Urban, they're utterly forgettable, except for Pegg who is just plain poor.

I'd have said the casting was a problem for me...

Different strokes for different folks. ;)

My first impression in 2009 was that they'd assembled a stellar cast who all had superb chemistry with each other. I was convinced of that even before I came around to accepting other, more contentious aspects of the movie. :techman:

None of the actors stood out for me, but the only one I had problems with was Chris Pine. He looks and acts like a teenager in the first two movies. Of course, my far biggest issue with the current crop of movies is the writing for Kirk, just doesn't live up to where he should be.

That's part of his character arc, though. He's growing up from the layabout bar-brawler we saw in the first movie, to the hotshot above-the-rules careless captain in STID, to now (from what I can tell from the previews) a seasoned and experienced starship commander. The Kirk we saw in TOS grew up in a much more stable household and universe, so JJ's Kirk wouldn't instantly be the same.

Oh I get the arc. The problem is that his promotion from Cadet or Ensign to Captain made no sense, his (cancelled) demotion in STID didn't make sense (unless you want to believe that Adm Marcus set him up to get killed, fine) and his character made no sense.
