I bought the Watchmen: Director's Cut DVD knowing full well that an ultimate cut was coming at the end of the year. When I broke open the DC I saw a coupon for the DC and it outlined the special features.
They don't seem that special. The Complete Motion Comic. Got it. Behind the Hood. Got it. It sucks BTW. Director's commenatary. Normally that's a selling point but all the reviews I read of 300 on DVD say that Snyder's commentary consisted of telling the audience which shots were his favorites. I haven't heard the 300 commentary for that reason but for that reason alone commentary isn't a selling point for me.
The coupon said that besides BTH there was also over two hours of special features that it didn't outline but I strongly suspect it's going to be material recycled from the other Watchmen DVD releases. Has more concrete information on those features been released?
Setting aside the special features altogether the coupon described the UE as the DC with Tales of the Black Freighter cut in. Now I loved TotBF. It was a fun Tales from the Cryptish cartoon. I love to watch that DVD. I also loved the DC of Watchmen which is something I couldn't say for the theatrical cut. I found the TC to be pretty cold. Sterile. But the DC really breathes and Hollis Mason's death is pretty moving if you ask me. There's a part of me that feels that the UE is as close as you could get to Watchmen without reading the novel or watchimg TMC. But there's a part of me that wonders if TFTBF is a literary conceit that wouldn't work cut into the live action movie as a whole.
Beyond that it seems that if it's just the DC and TFTBF that it's not worth much more than a rent. I thought Snyder said there'd be more live action scenes that weren't used in either the TC or DC? Am I incorrect?
IMO it seems that if you have the previous Watchmen DVD releases that there's no incentive to buy the UE.
Are any of you going to buy it? Just curious.
