Except Firefly was a much more expensive show than Dollhouse.Fox honestly was trying to make up for what they did to Firefly. But a better way to do that would have been to bring back Firefly.

Well, in addition to the bigger budget Firefly carried there's also the fact that Serenity failed at the box office, so it's no surpise that Fox wouldn't give the show another shot. Plus the genesis of Dollhouse was Eliza Dushku's talent deal with Fox and a lunch she had with Whedon to get advice on what type of show she should do following the demise of Tru Calling. At that lunch Whedon outlined the basic framework of Dollhouse, which both of them got excited about and took it to Fox.Maybe...but it did come with better reviews and a fanbase built in. And they already owned it.
