Will Doc 11 get the regeneration crazyness?

Tennent pulled it off well, and Tom Baker, but Smith seems more serious, so I wonder if they will skip the post regeneration crazyness and just have him come in with his personality complete and intact.

The Doctor tends to go through traumatic regenerations, so the crazyness that follows is almost expected at this point. Short of dying of old age, getting bumped on the head, or having the regeneration forced upon him, we'll pretty much have an eleventh Doctor who pops in ready to pass out, jump around, shout randomly, and generally be bonkers until he settles down.

Well it might be a more subdued form of post regeneration sickness, more Davison than Colin/Tom Baker--Hopefully he won't spend half his first episode asleep like Tennant :)

Have any of the Doctors not acted a bit strange after regeneration?

I hope we get at least something.

If you're gonna change your entire physical makeup, your gonna have least some regeneration-lag.

Smith being a little more serious, but still having an eccentric and fast paced personality, he might play that down a little.

It all depends how Moffat, im guessing hell do it as Smith is His doctor, writes it.

We might have a more psycological madness type thing. Quiet moments, emotional turmoil maybe even angry moments and a snappyier/moody first few hours.

Hopefully it won't be over done. Producer John Nathan Turner allegedly liked to emphasise post regenerative stress as a way of ensuring that casual viewers, who might only be watching to see what the new Doctor is like, would stick with the show. A tactic RTD employed in The Christmas Invasion.

Not a single one. Even the Second Doctor was a bit loopy at first...but then he stayed that way afterwards.

Romana and the Master handle regenerations much better, but the causes for the Doctor's various regenerations tend to be chaotic anyway. Perhaps in an ideal situation, a Time Lord would have time to prepare for a regeneration to the point where he could choose when it would happen...

But IIRC, the Fourth Doctor's regeneration sickness didn't last all that terribly long. Sure, he was unconscious for a bit and spouted some random gibberish--"The Brontosaurus is large, placid...and stupid!"--but in fairly short order he was on his feet and running (quite literally).

I'd say the post-regenerative trauma for each Doctor is as follows:

  • Loopy (2nd Doctor)
  • Paranoid (3rd)
  • Confused (4th)
  • Erratic (5th)
  • Volatile (6th)
  • Distracted (7th)
  • Amnesiac (8th)
  • ? (9th)
  • Reckless (10th)
Which dwarf will Number 11 be? ;)

I think they should adopt a meta-approach and have 11 identify with segments of the audience; 11's sickness should be that he's incredibly depressed.

Doc 11 - "Sigh. I miss my hair."

so what "I loved being 10, people loved me as 10, I hope I can get use to being 11?" boy if thats the case then the 11th Doctor will be over shadowed by 10 in the same way Martha was Rose.

Pertwee's regeneration was pretty mild wasn't it? If I recall he pulled a Ten. Passed out and mostly slept through the first episode.

Agreed. Ditto for the Fourth Doctor - they carted him off to sickbay for a few minutes anyway. Mind you, the Fourth Doctor was arguably the first of the "abnormal" regenerations (the first was due to old age, and the second was forced by the Time Lords).

It's worth pointing out that the Seventh Doctor woke up after only a brief unconscious period following his regeneration, not unlike the Third. Aside from a moment's confusion about who and where he was, he was pretty much ready to go. It was the Rani that injected him with something that caused an approximation of post-regeneration amnesia, which is apparently common enough to be an actual Gallifreyan medical term. Between him and the second and third Doctors, they seemed to be the least troublesome of the regenerations.

Also, the Third, Fifth and Ninth Doctors regenerated due to some form of energy or chemical poisoning, which does help to explain the craziness their successors faced (in some cases throughout their tenure). The Fourth, Sixth (debateable) and Seventh had severe physical trauma as the cause of their regeneration, though whether that results in a different sort of condition after the renewal is questionable.

I could do without the craziness this time round. It was annoying in The Xmas Invasion with Tennant in bed for half the damn show. I doubt I'll get my wish but it would be nice if we could avoid all that. They can always write him as acting crazy in a future episode when he gets body swapped yet again or something.

I hate the post-regeneration crazies. The reasons for this is because I'm missing the old Doc and I don't want to have to deal with a new, out of kilter Doctor. Plus, I'm not really very good at change and new beginnings and don't really want to bother dealing with it all. I know I might get criticised for thinking this, but I just do. I just spend the whole time thinking, "oh, settle down, turn into the Doctor you're going to be so I can decide whether I like you or not." Shallow, I know! The only time it hasn't bothered me are with 8, who seemed lonely and isolated and I really felt for him; and 10, who just became the Doctor in front of my eyes. Oh, and 9 because a] we didn't see it, and b] he can do no wrong. Even 3 and 4 irritated me. And I love them.

I apologise for this post, I've had too much coffee this morning.
