Will Australians become extinct next week?

gturner

Admiral
Michael Crichton's novel Andromeda Strain, and the movie of the same name, warned mankind about the risks of an incredibly lethal plague returning on a space probe.

Later tonight Japan's Hayabusa probe will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and land in the Australian outback with a sample of ancient asteroid dust.

Anyone want to place bets on when the last Australian will turn into a pile of salt?

There is a natural barrier between Tasmania and the Mainland. Hopefully that will protect us down here.

Even a continent-wide plague can't possibly kill everybody.

The survivors will be wearing cool-looking leather gear and driving way-out funky cars.

Yes, I forgot that some people were immune to the Andromeda strain because their alcohol consumption threw off their blood pH.

^Exactly.

Yes, all the alcohol in the Australian's bloodstreams will most assuredly kill off any hapless intergalactic bacteria. No germ in the universe could survive that much beer.

Having lived there, I agree wholeheartedly.

In fact, the space virus is the one who should be afraid.

Well then, as the Aussies say, "DRINK UP! LET'S GET IN THE PISS!"

"Quiet Earth' only applies to New Zealand.
Oh, you are right.

I have been trying to get a copy of the novel "The Quiet Earth" but prices for a second-hand copy range from a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.
I just checked on that. My wife works at a chain book store. I didn't even know there was an book for that movie and after reading about the book, I want it. My wife ordered what appears to be a "print on demand" copy of the book. It was 12 bucks and if it is the real thing then I can send it to you after reading it. End of the world/survival type books are my favorite kind of book. There are not many in that category. I have a collection of the ones that fit into the kind I want. I just read a book about a small mountian town near where I live and how things go after an EMP blast where all electronics are destroyed. Its called "one second after" and I liked it.

I hope it is the right "The Quiet Earth" that you ordered. There are two novels by this name. The end of the Earth one is by Craig Harrison.

If it is the real one I would really appreciate a copy. I know that several other members on Trekbbs would also like a copy too as the movie is highly regarded. This book is sort of the Holy Grail of its genre because, I gather, not many copies were ever printed.

My favourite novel of this genre is Earth Abides by George R Stewart
One of mine as well. I have that one as well as on the beach. Miss Chicken, I could recommend another couple books to read. One is Called "The last ship" and should be easy to find. Its about a US Navy ship and what all happens and where it goes after a worldwide nuclear war. Another one that might be harder to find is "down to a sunless sea" about a 747 plane in mid flight over the atlantic when global nuclear war happens and how they progress after than and where they end up. I don't care too much for the ones that delve into fantasy or science fiction too much. I am a realist and want to deal with the possible in books like that. I also like sailing books of man against the sea and my favorite book as a kid was robinson crusoe.
