Wikileaks founder charged with.. rape?

Ever since I learned that a decade or so back I unknowingly read of Assange's earlier years in Underground, a chronicle of 1980s Australian hacker/phreaker culture, I've been attempting to get hold of the book again. Alas, no luck. :(

I would be very surprised if this charge is anything but complete and utter bullshit to discredit an unashamedly independent voice. Might be real, but I would be shocked if it is.

^^^My spidey senses are saying this is a setup, although it could have been a lot worse, he could have been another suicide victim...AKA David Kelly.

Could be a setup, he might really have done it, or it could be someone looking for notoriety. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

See if it's a set-up, there are quite a lot of issues with trying to pull it off in a foreign country, especially one like Sweden. something like dropping childporn on one of his computers would be easier to do.

probable that it's a setup. You're on the top-watch list of intelligence agencies all across the globe, you visit a foreign country for an important meeting, and then you go out and rape two women... who happen to know each other, and also refuse to go public to confront the opposing party?

And the most important effect is that even if he gets acquitted, newspapers will now always have in the title: "Wikileaks, organization headed by accused rapist Assange" etc etc. It's an attempt to discredit the head of wikileaks and thus public trust of the info that wikileaks puts out.

If you want to slander someone please do it right.. if it was indeed an US OP then your intelligency agencies have slipped big time if they can't pull off a simple blackmail ;)

I mean they've had weeks or months to organize a woman to meet this guy, have sex with him (are there single guys around who'd deny an attractive lady some pleasure?) and then frame him.. man, this is blackmail 101!

Who says it was a US operation? Just because that's the current target doesn't make it the only target. The smart thing for a country who knows they might be next on the list to get a black eye might decide it's better to redirect attention to another country before anything too incriminating comes out. And given how quickly the warrant was retracted you have to wonder just what is really going on here.

Or maybe it was a third party trying to galvanize wikileaks into releasing whatever's in the next 15,000 documents?

I can't wait to see the biopic movie about this. Probably an year or two after Assange dies in a tragic car crash or accidental self-strangulation.
