Why was society so vapid in the early 2010s?

Back in 2014 I was just an idealistic college student. One of my friends showed me a game called "Mass Effect" and it gave me a sense of wonder of what might be out there in space. Neil Degrasse Tyson added fuel to that fire. Unfortunately there was little interest in space and sci fi at that time. Reality shows, doctor soaps, and cop shows were the dominate forces on TV.

My fellow students seemed more interested in becoming rich, partying, and watching reality TV.

Why not be athletic, fun loving, and yet smart? Like the badass Apollo astronauts.

Why did we become that vapid?

The time period you are speaking of was part of a modern renaissance of quality television, with plenty of thought-provoking, challenging dramatic content (mostly on cable). Or do you feel that sci-fi is the only worthwhile genre? I often get that sense from the most ardent SF enthusiasts.
