Why was Savik part of the science mission?

She was on a command path yes? Not science.

I will grant you that most Vulcans have a high degree of scientific appitude but both the political sensitivity of Genesis and the particulars of its nature demanded a small team.

Was the Enterprise just wandering around after ST:II with out reason with a skeleton crew? I imagine all the scientists that were on leave from Regula probably were back on Earth.

I don't think she was hitchiking with David Marcus indirectly to Earth since any Reliant survivors + Enterprise trainees would most likely have rendevoued with a vessel or starbase larger than a diminitive and crew limited Oberth class following transit to Ceti Alpha V.

Probably for the same sorts of reasons that we saw your Mr. Chekov at bothe the navigation station as well as the science station from time. If not for full-out cross-traiing, Starfleet apparantly likes its young officers to be familiar with a broag range of jobs/functions. Pretty sensible, IMO.

IIRC, Grissom was dispatched directly to survey and study Genesis. They would have wanted someone from Enterprise... Even if he hadn't died, Spock would have still been Captain of the Enterprise and there was no other science officer IIRC. Maybe part of her movement from cadet red to command white, Alley to Curtis?

Because she was a popular character with the fans and they wanted her to reappear. Of course, she didn’t reappear, either the actress or the personality, but they used the same name so I guess that’s cool.

Saavik already had a passing knowledge of the Genesis Project, she had seen the torpedo/control panel and had witnessed formation of the planet. Which put her ahead of any of the Grissom's crew.

But there another possibility too, Kirk said in his Captain's Log that: "Most of our trainee crew has been reassigned. Lieutenant Saavik and my son, David are exploring the Genesis planet which he helped create. It wasn't just Saavik, the majority of Spock's Starfleet cadets were reassigned to the Grissom. Now Saavik and David were the only ones mentioned by name, and the cadets could have been transferred to another/other ship(s).

If secrecy was an issue, then transferring them to Grissom would have been good from a security point of view. It would have kept the majority of the inexperienced young people incommunicado.

:)

One thing that I didn't understand is why they sent a single unprotected science vessel to Genesis. They should have sent multiple science vessels along with Starship escorts for protection.

Given Morrow's dialogue with Kirk, that would have been a no-no. They considered it secret and didn't want to have that many more people on separate ships to isolate/debrief. It would have made sense for another ship better capable of defending itself, but Kruge's mission didn't appear to be an official mission sponsored by the Empire but he was freelancing, as it were or his ship would have also been bigger (much less a stolen Romulan ship like it was supposed to be).

Also Grissom wasn't unprotected, they were just caught off-guard. There's nothing in the movie to suggest they couldn't have held their own if they'd had time to raise shields.

I doubt it. Captain Esteban would have wanted to contact Star Fleet to get permission and instructions before raising shields.

Is it possible she was XO?

It seemed like a relatively small ship. She had prior knowledge of the Genesis Device and she was being groomed for command. She didn't seem to be a cadet in STII, but an officer receiving some sort of advanced training. She certainly had some respected officers to vouch for her.

It's a possibility - but the smallish ship's CO was a full Captain, suggesting Starfleet wanted people with brass and experience on this mission. Saavik would be an excellent "mission specialist", but making her a trusted top officer at such a low rank and apparent short service record...? Not all that likely IMHO.

On the general concept of reassigning, it should be noted that the scene of the ST2 adventure probably wasn't particularly far from Earth. Not only did Kirk's ship get into the general vicinity during a (supposedly) short and aimlessly wandering training cruise (indeed, one apparently organized as a birthday present for Kirk), but Ceti Alpha would have been close to the location where Khan was originally found (no reason for Kirk to go far in search of a place to maroon him), and Khan couldn't have gotten that far away from Earth in his sublight ship. And the Reliant got from Ceti Alpha to Regula quite fast, too.

A generic starship at standard velocities could probably whisk the cadets from the wounded Enterprise to Earth or to other central UFP locations in no time flat, allowing them to be distributed to various ships and other assignments there, without needing to send each and every ship to the Enterprise in turn. The difference between low warp and medium or high warp would appear to be quite extreme, and the hero ship could spend quite a lot of time carefully crawling back to Earth so as not to create too much additional damage. (And she'd apparently still fail, sporting bigger and more extensive patches at arrival than she did at the end of ST2!)

I don't think it will be a problem for NuSaavik... :p
