I have always been frustrated by ST:TMP’s having Spock at Gol, but never explaining why. “Star Trek Continues” provided a possible scenario, but does anyone here have a theory? Not looking for what GR may have written down somewhere. I never saw anything in 3rd season that came close to indicating that he wanted to eliminate all emotion.

My least favorite thing about TMP is that it sets out to dismantle both Kirk and Spock (for professional competence and personality, respectively), and they don't get their sh-- together until very late in the movie.
I think Gene Roddenberry / whoever else was behind these ideas, was afraid of being seen to do the ordinary. They wanted to do the unexpected, and who would ever expect you to sabotage your long-established heroes?
Both Shatner and Nimoy were unhappy with what was done to them, but they didn't have the power at that point to stop it. Also, the movie was rushed into production without even a finished script for them to give notes on.

Kirk being 'kicked upstairs' to a desk job, and Spock leaving Starfleet and seeking enlightenment on Vulcan were themes in Star Trek revival attempts going back to GR's 1975 God Thing script. Were they unhappy then as well, or were these projects cancelled before they had the chance to do anything about it?
