Why so hard on Star Trek III?

Gary Sebben

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I gotta say, I love this movie, but I see so many trekkies bashing it. Really, besides Robin Curtis, what's wrong with this movie?

Christopher Lloyd is an awesome Klingon, and for the first person to ever speak Klingon for more than one word grunts he does an excellent job.

The Bird of Prey, Oberth, Excelsior, and Star Dock were all introed in this movie. All are awesome.

Great drama. Kirk reacting to his son's death, mccoy talking it brainless spock, Saavik pon farring.

Great action. Better lava planet showdown than Revenge of the Sith, space battles, heart breaking but necessary destruction of the E, jail breaks.

It almost seems like this is as good as a Trek movie can get. So why don't you like this move (if you don't)?

I don't think it's really accurate to call this a movie that a lot of people bash, at least not here. Nobody voted it worst movie in the poll about that. At worst people tend to call it rather mediocre, but not horrible. It's rarely voted the worst in the series, but also rarely voted the best.

And unlike movies like "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and all the TNG movies, I rarely see threads that go into great detail about what people think is wrong with it. It's the quintessential middle of the road Star Trek movie, but it even has a small number of vocal supporters here. I think it's generally well-regarded, certainly not nearly as unfairly maligned as "Star Trek: First Contact", which deserves much better than it gets from many of this forum's members.

Yeah, I said what I thought was wrong with it in the other thread. To say something different from there, I talked about it positively here, but I guess it could be argued that it's not necessary to have both threads.
