Why are there no bridges between Long Island and the State of Connecticut ?
Long Island Sound Bridge Crossing Study
An excellent study on Long Island Bridge Crossings from a website heavily examining Connecticut roads
And we can't ignore the fact that there's a ferry between Mystic, CT and Orient Point, Long Island, which takes care of the eastern end of both areas. There's also a ferry between Bridgeport, CT and Port Jefferson, Long Island, which takes care of the central region. The western region has all of the bridges connecting Brooklyn and Queens to the rest of the world. From a purely aesthetic perspective, which is important when dealing with things like the lovely Connecticut coastline, why add to the pollution and added congestion from cars driving over a bridge to get to a place that already has ferry service if you don't have to?
Also, just practically speaking, nowadays, the property values for the existing houses would likely plummet if the land weren't waterfront anymore. There, alone, you're going to see people fight it. Add in the invasion of a bridge on their waterfront views, and I wouldn't want to think of the backlash.
I also wish that a massive hydro electric dam could be built between LI and Connecticut.
What's the motivation for New York to do it? They've already got Niagara Falls feeding into the grid. And if NY isn't on board, why would CT undergo such a massive undertaking on their own? Especially if NY doesn't give them the permits to build into NY territory?
The sound could be reduced in size to a super wide canal.
New homes, businesses, and commercial enterprises could be built on the reclaimed land.
The profit would be incredible !
And that would effectively destroy Long Island Sound.
Okay, let's see if we can't gear this more toward the technology aspect instead of the practical. Obviously, there have been studies on bridge crossings. The environmental impacts can't be ignored. Put a hydroelectric dam into play with it, and there are some major issues afoot.
