Why do you love Voyager?

I just love it. There is something about the show that I cannot explain that appeals to me. I'm not saying that it was the best TREK show. ACtually, I feel that VOYAGER, DEEP SPACE and NEXT GENERATION are equally pretty damn good. DS9 had the potential to be the best, but Ronald Moore's handling of long story arcs ruined that potential. Moore proved with both DS9 and BSG that he lacked the ability to sustain a multi-season story arc with any real success.

Many fans have complained that VOY had failed to become another BSG. Frankly, I'm glad that it didn't. For me, VOY managed to create its own aura or style. And let's face it. The STAR TREK franchise does not have a reputation for being gritty. Some of the episodes in all of the series have managed to be gritty every once in a while. But TREK is not BSG (2004-?). I don't see why it should try to be something it is not.

But I must admit that if there is one thing I like about VOY more than any other TREK show, it is the characters. There is something about them that really fascinates me.

Kekeg quoted a positive and agreed with it, and added their own opinion. Nothin' wrong with that, as far as I can see.

I wasn't trying to moderate the thread, just trying to elicit further conversation.

Kegek has nifty ideas about every facet of Trek (from what I have read) and I was just hoping he/she would say more.

My reason for starting this thread was that some other recent, negative threads about VOY were closed. I was hoping that starting off on a positive note would stimulate more responses--- hopefully of the same nature.

Anyway, let me add another thing to the thread: I loved "Homestead." I was never a fan of Neelix, but I found Phillips' performance in this episode pretty damn moving. Great insight into how Neelix viewed himself on Voyager. I really wish this had been a non-traditional two-parter, with an earlier episode showing Neelix's loneliness aboard a Federation vessel, and sense of his technical/scientific incompetence compared to the crew; then a few unrelated epsisodes before "Homestead" permitted his triumphant homecoming (of sorts.)

I loved "Homestead," too. It was both a touching and exciting episode. I think Neelix is funny; and Ethan Phillips does a good job with the character.

Kate Mulgrew is an actress I have no respect for and I never did care much for Janeway.

the main reason I got into it is this: a friend of mine had been writing a story that crossed Voyager and *don't laugh* Star Wars, which is kind of cool when you think about it; you combine all teh cool things of ST and SW, lol. Anyways, she wasn't a friend at the time but she got me to reading it and we started becoming friends and mainly because of her writing the story, I got into Voyager more than any other series.

Three other reasons I love it: Tom, Tom\b'Elanna relationship, and the Tom\Harry friendship. Tom is just so funny in some episodes and he reminds me so much of Han Solo, and of myself *Haha*; plus the B'Elanna\Tom relationship is just so darn cute! Who doesn't love them??? The Tom\Harry friendship is great; I think the writers really hit it off with those two. *not in a slashy way, mind you.*

I like Voyager because it was the first Trek I ever watched...the only good thing my first boyfriend ever did for me was 'make' me watch it!

I loved that the crew started as a fractured group of troubled people, and they helped each other grow and became a family in a way. Tom and B'Elanna formed a literal family. The last scene in "11:59" is one of my favorites because that group photo of the crew is a great benchmark of how far the crew had grown.

Captain Janeway is also my favorite Captain because she is an explorer at heart. The first three seasons showcased this better than the last four with episodes like "Parallax," " Deadlock," and "Sacred Ground."

There is something about the cast and the situation in which the Voyager crew found itself in that appealed to me more than the other TREK series.

Quality wise - I consider TNG, DS9 and VOY to be equal in quality and TOS and ENT to be slightly inferior to the other three.

I found the situation they were in to be more appealing becaus it offered a bit more action and variety every week. There was this sort of 'unknown' and opportunities to delve into areas that could seldom be explored with the other Treks. (Ie: New anomalies/aliens/technologies indiginous to the Delta Quadrant)

I also found it to be a bit more laid back and not as philisophical/political. Of course there were episodes that really crawled up inside the mind and dealt with social issues but we weren't berated with it every week--and if we were, it was a lot more subtle. Sometimes the episodes were just fun and full of action, which I enjoyed a lot more.
