Why do you love Voyager?

Cyclopean

There's never a dearth of "why did Voyager suck?" or "how can we improve Voyager?" threads.

Let's have a discussion where we emphasize the positive.

I guess I'll start it off.

My favorite things about VOY:

1. Kate Mulgrew. Her acting is superb. I'm not always a fan of how Janeway is written, but Kate is wonderful.
2. Comedy episodes. Robert Picardo is excellent in stuff like "Tinker, Tenor..." and Jeri Ryan is great in "Inside Man." During VOY's later seasons, it did comedy better than any Trek show, IMO. (Please don't quote this for lame sarcastic replies about unintentionally funny episodes.)
3. Tuvok. Tim Russ's performance is another one of my favorite things about this show. His wry responses to other characters crack me up. I think he's more consistenly performed than the great Spock ("Jim? You're alive!"), and he's very good in episodes where he's allowed to 'stretch his legs' so to speak ("Meld" and "Riddles.").

Oh, and please no comments like "It got canceled hehehehehe[/beavis]." We're all funnier than that, I think.

I loved Voyager because of the cast and the storyline of the ship being stranded in an uncharted quadrant. And of course, gotta love having a female Captain!!!!! :D I just loved Kate Mulgrew's role. At first, didn't think I was gonna like the show or Janeway but after the ep "The Cloud" I was hooked. At first I thought Janeway was too dry and too tense. But she deepened as a character throughout season 2 and I really started to enjoy her as a character.
I also loved Robert Picardo as the Doctor. He was superb in that role! Everytime I turned around, he was always making me laugh with his dry sense of humor. When he shrunk in the ep "Parallex", I thought I'd double over with laughter. The Doc reminded me of myself sometimes because sometimes I felt underutilized and also felt like I was being treated like a hypospray. :)
Fav characters: I like all of them but my most fav would have to be the Captain and that dashing First Officer of hers. :D:D:D:D:D  He makes my toes curl! :guffaw: Anyway, I loved the show and wished it had gotten more credit. I believe that it deserved more credit than it was due. There are too many posters here that criticize Voyager fans and that just burns me up. You don't see me going on the ENT forum and criticizing ENT fans for liking the show! We shouldn't be criticized for liking a show. Everyone is different and everyone has their own shows they love and shows they hate. That's just my two cents. :) Thanks for having a thread like this..we need some positive feedback for Voy as well as some negativity. :)

First off, I really am a Natural Born Niner™ who places Voyager on the lower spectrum of beloved Trek shows. In fact it is my least favorite of the series (it's the only series I don't own on DVD). BUT, I don't outright hate this series, because there are some things I really like about it. Those things are ...

| The characters. Maybe I'm too emotional or something, but I just like the people on this ship. I like Paris' affectation for old sci-fi serials. I like Chakotay's spirituality, Janeway's role as mother of the crew, Tuvok being Janeways old friend. Hell, I even like Neelix (especially in episodes like "Rise", "Mortal Coil" and "Fair Trade").

| I really love many episodes. "Eye of the Needle", "Living Witness", "Memorial" or "Year Of Hell" are wonderful entries into Trek lore.

| Often Voyager really felt like adventure!

These are the ones that come to mind in the moment. However, the sad thing is that there are so many things the series didn't get right. But sometimes I'm a very optimistic kind of guy, that's why I also like it ...

Now I'll have to run before a fellow Niner sees me ... ;)

Too late, Belar. You're in our sights. ;)

I'm one of those who loves all the series as a whole, even though some individual episodes are disappointing. VOY's main cast is probably my third favorite of the franchise. The series has lots of interesting ideas, concepts, and guest stars. When it is at its best, it has plenty of adventure and heart. From a production standpoint, it almost always looked and sounded stellar.

VOY got it right more often than it got it wrong, and that's a difficult feat for any TV show to pull off.

I could pretty much say the same thing (although Enterprise is the one series I don't own.) But my "anchor" to the show, as it were, is the Doctor. Fantastic character. Although I consider most of the series mediocre, it did occassionally have some great and/or fun episodes. It was especially good at doing comedy episodes ("Tinker" and "Author, Author" for example.)

Ironic that, given my feelings towards the show, I run the caption contest here, but I guess that makes it easier for me to find ridicule-worthy stuff.

These are pretty much my sentiments as well. VOY isn't up there with TOS-TNG-DS9, and it's not down there with ENT.

^^What part about "emphasize the positive" don't you understand?

It would be nice, even appropriate to the spirit of the thread,--- read in the spirit it was intended,--- to actually mention things positive about VOY, rather than declare that, 'while it is not up to snuff, at least it is better than ENT.'

In other words, praise with specifics please. :)

I'm going to add another thing I liked: the Delta Flyer. It's a nifty little boat, clearly designed to fix a problem with how the show was being written, yet it still manages to have a character of its own.

And the "Good Shepherd" is a good episode almost entirely set on the DF.

Definitely the characters. AS a long-time Spock fan I was excited to have another Vulcan on the crew. (Tuvie rules!)

The same for me! I think the line "There's coffee in that nebula!" did it for me. :)

Cyclopean, ya started the thread, why not let me & Akiraprise moderate it? That is, after all, what TBonz doesn't pay us for.

Kekeg quoted a positive and agreed with it, and added their own opinion. Nothin' wrong with that, as far as I can see.

Now, back to the topic...I suppose I liked Tuvok & Torres the most out of all the characters, alien races & stuff that VOY brought to the franchise. I liked how Tuvok was an advisor / teacher / mentor / friend to just about everyone on the crew, all in different ways. Neelix looked up to him, Chakotay took his advice, Janeway depended on him as a moral compass, Paris went to him for fatherly advice, and Kes needed his help with her abilities. An early example that was one of my favorites was when Harry expressed shock & awe at some sort of stellar phenomenon, and, from across the bridge, Tuvok contacted via commbadge & advised him he was settin' a bad example as a senior officer.

Torres, though, was a whole other thing...she was just cool. Though she had that "human half" / "Klingon half" thing that Spock had, as if behaviour is solely dictacted by DNA, I liked that she was always ready to go to full boil. Plus, she was a hottie.

I was going to, but Evil Twin did just as well. I love the Doctor, he's one of my favourite Star Trek characters. And I'm very fond of Voyager in general, watching it makes me nostalgic for teh 1990s.

Why do I love Voyager eh?

Well, because it was a great series. The action was awesome and the borg arcs were great too.

I like the characters and the character interaction. Voy is good with comedy and some of the drama really gripped me. A big draw for me are also the strong female characters. They're not just eye candy who flatter the guys' ego.
What is often criticized but what I like is that Voy is such an upbeat, positive show. The squeaky clean look and the characters getting along most of the time might not be very realistic, but it makes for a nice "feel good" show. :)

The best thing about Voy is that this show always managed to entertain me.

Well, as they say in telenovelas, El corazón no se manda. No one commands the heart. I just love it; always have -- probably always will.

I actually don't really know why I like it so much. I think it may have to do with the action and the variety of cool characters makes it intriguing.

I like he cast and the high concept sci-fi plots. SEven of Nine is one of my favorite television characters.

The same for me! I think the line "There's coffee in that nebula!" did it for me.

Exactly, kimc!! That's what got it for me too. Thanks for reminding me. :) I adored that line..plus the part where she didn't know anything about playing pool and then knocked all them balls in the pocket. I couldn't believe she was that good at pool! WOW!

1. The Doctor - he's a great character compared to any character on any trek series.

2. Threshold - seriously. It's the best train wreck of an episode I've ever seen.

3. A few really good episodes: Projections, Distant Origin, Author Author, Pathfinder, Year of Hell, Living Witness

^ Yay, someone else who loves "Projections"! I'm telling you, it doesn't get enough love around here. :(
