Why do the trailers claim to be in 4k when the show is shot at 1080p?

What amazes me is the actual show doesn't even look as good as 1080p. Maybe not even as good as 720p upconverted at times.

The blu-rays are another story, those are gorgeous.
You're not the 1st to have that observation, probably some conversion issues based on individuals method of streaming. As for me, despite what I think of these shows, the resolution looks 4K to me and they have a cinematic appearance but I stream ALL Paramount Access + on the PS5; another reason for my seamless viewing is because I live close to a large city.

For the Americans here, does Paramount+ have 4K?

Yes, it's available on Apple TV 4K, Select Android TV models, Amazon Fire TV (Stick 4k, Cube) and certain Roku models. It's available in 4K, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision.

I watch Picard in 4K on my AppleTV 4k, it looks really nice.

Paramount+ video player also sucks ass. If you can watch it through Amazon prime it looks better. At least according to an American friend of mine

I've had zero issues watching any 4k shows on the Paramount+ app on my Apple TV 4K. Everything looks really nice. And it's in HDR10 and some have Dolby Vision.

Actually at least on my AppleTV 4K Picard doesn't stream in 4K from Paramount+. It streams in 1080p with Dolby Vision. "Discovery" for the first three seasons was also streamed in 1080p with Dolby Vision on Paramount+ and on Netflix internationally. Then some season 4 episodes on P+ of Discovery were labled als 4K DV on the AppleTV, but that was probably just a labeling error since the later episodes were all 1080p with Dolby Vision again. When you watch Picard check the playback info. Just because it streams in Dolby Vision doesn't means it's also 4K. When it's 4K there is an additional 4K-Logo in the Playback-Info not just the Dolby Vision-Logo.
Amazon Prime is only streaming the show in 1080p without DV/HDR internationally.
