Why do People like Ezri?

TheLobes

Commander

Seriously? Why? All the comments left about her which Ive read seem to indicate people like her just because she's hot, it also probably helps that shes the only Trek female who seems like they might be into Trek, and by extension Trek nerds.

Is that the only reason people like her? I just dont understand her character at all, or why they bothered including her in the series. Shes bought aboard as a counselor, but the one time she could actually shine as a counselor (with hop-a-long Nog) she totally sucked at it. She had two episodes devoted to her, and they both sucked. Her relationship with Bashir was totally forced was zero passion. It also sucked. I cant think of one thing she did (apart from Worf and Bashir) that couldnt have been done by someone else.

Dont get me wrong, I wasnt a huge fan of Jadzia. I liked her when she was in the background of other peoples stories, not so much when the episode was actually about her, a bit like Quark. However, she did seem, most of the time, to be a being with seven lifetimes of experience, and I never got that from Ezri. I mean you can talk about her not being initiated properly and not knowing how to deal with it and stuff until the cows come home, but essentially these are just excuses. I would imagine that if you dumped a Trill symbiant into someone who had no training for it, that person would be pretty messed up for a while, and again that did not happen with Ezri.

I think the main problem was timing. The series had one season left, and it had a lot to pack into that season. There really wasnt much time to introduce a completely new character. They have to introduce her, develop her, and make those developments pay off in a ridiculously short time, with a whole season to end at the same time. They could have introduced her at the beginning of season six and it would probably have worked, but placing a new character in an ending series felt like someone slamming a car into reverse at 90mph.

I think it would have been much better if they just killed the whole Dax symbiant as well as Jadzia. Can you imagine how much more impact that would have had? Dukat would have killed not just one of Sisko's greatest friends, but two of them! Plus six other lives and the potential for numerous more. That also would have meant feeling the loss of Dax a lot more, as it was her death barely meant anything, because there was a new one there the next episode. Someone told me that Jadzia died at the end of series six, what I imagined was maybe some Jem-Hadar stabbing Jadzia in the gut, having her lose the symbiant before dieing herself, I thought that would be awesome, but instead they totally screwed it up.

So, why do you like/hate Ezri?

What annoys me is that from an in-universe standpoint, they could've saved Jadzia easily.

1. Rescue and preserve symbiont.
2. Clone Jadzia's body, keep it from developing a mind while on life support.
3. Perform Zhian'tara ritual on body to transfer Jadzia's personality into it.
4. Implant Dax symbiont.

It's a pity Terry Farrell didn't want to do a final season.

Well, I don't dislike her, but I'm not exactly a fan of the character either. She's just "meh" to me. One thing that did annoy me about her though is the way she kept saying "That's so sweet" to just about everything. Minor point I know, but that's what sticks out most for me.

And even though I'll most likely be vastly outnumbered here, I don't find her to be attractive.

I much prefered Jadzia, and I'm rather disappointed she didn't last the full seven seasons.

Oh, boy. I have a bad feeling about this...

Personally, its not as much as i find her incredibly attractive. But i'm also very fond of her personality. I also like the way she works as a councelor, that caring thing she does. You dpnt speak to her because you have to, but because you want. I study psychology as well, i believe that is also a factor.

The OP has summed up my feelings about Ezri perfectly.

Jadzia, you will always be missed.

I personally couldn't stand Ezri.
That boy cut wasn't attractive.
She lost all talent
I hate weak women charcters
She was really good for nothing.

I dunno, I kinda liked having someone around who wasn't particularly good at anything. I could have lived with having no 'replacement' character for Jadzia, but I didn't begrudge Ezri's presence either. (Except for 'Prodigal Daughter'. ;) )

Paging Rush Limborg. Rush Limborg please. ;)

Why do I love her? Because she's the polar opposite of Jadzia.

Instead of using and manipulating men, Ezri respects them. Her personality is sweet, innocent and caring - not arrogant, self-absorbed and ball-busting. She cares about the needs of others. She's warm, inviting and, dare I say it, feminine. She's also vulnerable; not all female characters have to be hard-charging, gung-ho, hoorah Amazons.

That and she's one of the most attractive women I've ever seen. :)

Thats true, but this isnt a reason to put her in the show. I think your use of the word 'feminine' is mildly anachronistic, especially when we're talking about 24th century characters. If anything, the fact that shes 'warm and inviting' is actually more detrimental to the show than if she'd been a ball busting Amazon. That sort of character didnt fit into the mood of the show at the time, and is generally harder to get to know anyway. If she had been another kickass Jadzia type they could at least have fit her into the story a little better.

It sounds like it would not have been a such a problem for many if such a less-than-gung-ho/kickass female had stayed in the background of DS9 more (Although I am assuming such a non-Amazon type of woman will continue to exist in the future!...), rather than be put at (or near) center stage so often. Maybe this, however, would have really let Dax unfairly fade out with a wimper?

So feminine people like Ezri will cease to exist in the coming centuries?

IMO, the fact that she was so different is another reason she was so great. If all the characters are the same, what's the point?

I think there will be far less use of the words 'feminine' and 'masculine'. They simply wont be needed anymore, because those things which we consider feminine and masculine will hopefully no longer be associated with a particular gender. Id say Mayor Kira and Jadzia possessed both 'feminine' and 'masculine' characteristics, they were not themselves 'hard-charging, gung-ho, hoorah Amazons', they were just people.

Im not saying people who we would call feminine will disappear, but what you said that it was nice to have someone who was 'feminine' as opposed to the aforementioned gungho Amazons, and I think thats a mistake.

And yeah, her being different from everyone else would have been good, but not in at the start of the seventh season. As I said, its not so much the character I didnt like, as much as the way they tried to jam her into the series. DS9 already had a rich mix of different personalities, it wasnt exactly screaming out for another one.

I didn't like her. She was too childish for my taste. Too weak. Too boneless.

And MU Ezri was just ridiculous. It's not enough to paint a heavy make up on her face to make her look "tough and dangerous". She still had her baby face, thin voice and cute look. She was just soooooooo NOT tough.

I think she's OK. She worked well as a supporting character in episodes like The Siege of AR-558 and Tacking Into the Wind, but unfortunately, I didn't much like any of the episodes where she was the main focus. Also, I found the love triangle extremely dull. Nicole DeBoer did a perfectly good job and Ezri came across as a likeable person, but I don't think she always got the best writing.

WTF are you talking about?

Not tough?

BTW: Rushbo! Get you ass in here ASAP! Ezri's honor is at stake!

OH GOD YES.
Likely her is like liking your little sister....she wasn't a woman.
I would have prefered Adria from Stargate in the role.

I like her because she's cute and sexy. Oh, and also, I'm fascinated by the whole concept of the trill.

MU? Do you mean Mothers Union?

No. I like her because she's sweet, endearing, and very entertaining to watch as a character. I enjoyed watching her stumble into her role on DS9, and I think Nicole deBoer played her beautifully. It doesn't hurt that she's hot.

I honestly never would've thought of that.

So, wait. Lemme get this straight. Because Nog is emotionally closed-off and is sick of talking about his feelings, Ezri sucks at her job. Alrighty then.

She had two episodes devoted to her, and they both sucked.
And you're wrong on both counts. In my opinion, of course. :)

Her relationship with Bashir was totally forced was zero passion. It also sucked.
On this, I actually agree with you.

I cant think of one thing she did that couldnt have been done by someone else.
Aside from the "hurrdurrhurrrrr"-worthy Bashir and Worf comment: Show a new perspective on Joran, present a Trill main character who doesn't see joining as an honor, and show a more direct continuation of Dax's friendship with Sisko since we never knew Curzon personally before he died. There, I've named three off the top of my head.

I would imagine that if you dumped a Trill symbiant into someone who had no training for it, that person would be pretty messed up for a while, and again that did not happen with Ezri.
...it didn't? She spent half the season sorting herself out, and she did spend time dealing with it before she met Sisko.

I think the timing was brilliant. I wish they had had more time to use Ezri, but it worked out great dramatically because it was unexpected, and I thought a great use of the Trill symbiont. I also would hardly call Jadzia's death meaningless, considering how different Ezri was and that Jadzia is still gone forever.

A better thread title would be "Why do people hate Ezri" since I see FAR more whining than I do people that actually like her.
