Why didn't they try this one simple trick

Protomatter. One of many very powerful substances that are dangerous to even those who use them, IMO.

Besides, if the Borg had adapted to the Genesis Torpedo--goodbye Federation probably...

EDIT: On second thought, a fully-armed starship is probably a far more powerful weapon than a Genesis Torpedo. It can be just as destructive, but maybe not as quickly.

Exactly.

Drs Marcus did their tests on an actual planet/planetoid environment, using factored quantities of various components/ingredients/etc, which is rather different in so many ways to a constructed starship. "Protomatter" likely did its job quite effectively had the device been used on a lifeless planet. The explosion turned teeny tiny Reliant into a big-ass planet, which didn't last too long either as a result - and it had to take matter from somewhere else to create the Genesis Planet with, too.Never mind any life forms plopped onto it at just the right moment, get the popcorn because it's bound to be a real chill thrill to watch.:ack::guffaw:

Saavik can give David a dopey guilt trip all she wants. She's actually being too pompous to be bothered to listen or give him the time to do more than stammer up an impromptu answer when he, like any human and unlike any Vulcan, can't remember every last nuance off the cuff. No wonder the original idea was to make her a villain in ST6, it fits in perfectly - though there was no tie-in to the events of II-IV, it still works.

Amazingly, the Genesis schematics and documentation weren't in Enterprise's mainframe when the Borg arrived and took a bit of the ship with it.

If the Borg didn't find out about Genesis when they assimilated dozens of Neutral Zone Outposts, or Assimilated Picard, or the assimilation of 39 star ships at the battle of Wolf 359, they do not care.

Its not hard to blow up a planet.

Hydro bomb on an active Volcano?

But it is hard to assimilate a planet full of tech and meat, that's been blown up or turned into a forest.

The Mutara Nebula itself was harvested…and probably not far from the source of Ceti Alpha’s instability. It may not have been protomatter’s fault after all.

Really, Return of the Jedi being a cross-over with movie era Trek in place of ST III might have been nice. Spock stays dead…Kirk and Vader kill one another…and you even have a cross-over with Doctor Who meeting his end by using Genesis-teched Tardis on Death Star II….turning that weapon into New Alderan….even bringing its population back to life.

It would have been a nice way to wrap up three franchises going out on top—-and letting us go on to something new.

I imagine there's some "Raiders of the Lost Ark" type warehouse at Starfleet Command where they keep any Genesis info, Spore Drive schematics, Khan's magic blood, etc...

If the "Section 31" series is basically Star Trek: Warehouse 13 for that reason then I would watch the absolute ever-living SHIT out of it.
