Why didn't anyone on Voyager know about the Dominion?

I am not Spock

'Caretaker' took place chronologically after DS9s 'The Search'. Chakotay seems not to have heard about the Jem'Hadar before, when he tells B'Elanna that all of the Maquis have been slaughtered by the Cardassians and their 'new allies'. I suppose in his case, it is possible he was too busy fighting the Cardies, and probably would not have been paying attention to Federation politics and activities at the time.

The EMH mark two, when he says 'the Romulans haven't gotten involved in our war with the Dominion' gets a dumbfounded 'the who?' from 'our' Doc. Although that line was quite funny, why doesn't the EMH know about the Dominion? He's a Starfleet program, and I thought the Voyager was supposed to be a brand-new, straight-off-the-assmebly-line straship in 'Caretaker'. Wouldn't their ship's computer have up to date info about the Federation's latest enemies? Surely Janeway knew of the Dominion? We never found out if she did or not.

I found myself asking the same question when watching "Message In A Bottle" the other day. The Doc would know about the Dominion! Must be something the writers messed up. But of course the VOY crew wouldn't know about the war, would they?

You answered your own questions. They aren't going to know about the Dominion because they're in the Delta Quadrant well before the war started. There may be mention of it in transmissions from Startfleet, once Voyager was able to initiate regular contact; however, I don't think Starfleet would want to worry a stranded ship with the details about a war at home.

It is unlikely the EMH would know about the Dominion- he isn't a walking encylopedia like Data. He mostly knows about medical stuff, especially early on.

When Voyager got lost, the Federation barely knew about the Dominion. They were still mostly mysterious. And aside from Chakotay's mention of the Dominion to B'Elanna, there is nothing to indicate that others didn't know. Also, there were a lot of stuff we saw and heard on TOS and TNGthat one would think be well known but was never mentioned on Voyager. There's a chance there was someone on Voyager who had lost a loved one or an old friend on the Odyessey. Janeway probably knew of them. Just because we didn't hear the Voyager crew mentioning the Dominion doesn't mean they didn't know about it. It is a bit too fanboyish to expect Voyager to throw in a mention. The Federation was at war with the Talarians at one point. But as far as I can recall, they were never mentioned on Voyager. That doesn't mean they didn't know about the Talarians.

They obvioously knew about the Dominion since we saw Paris training Kes to fly a shuttle and you could see Jem'Hadar ships flying past the viewscreen.

I was going to say that, but I got sick of bringing it up, so didn't bother. Who is the blonde inbetween Niki and Claire?

Exactly - he has to study those things that aren't part of his narrow-scoped medical programming. And he's not particularly well wired for that, either: sometimes we see him using PADDs for this studying!

And Chakotay might have heard of the latest calamity to befall a Starfleet vessel on the other side of the wormhole - but it's not as if the wormhole mattered much to the Maquis. Even though the Badlands supposedly were fairly close to DS9 in relative terms, Maquis activities there weren't much affected by what went on in the Bajoran system or in or beyond its curious little spatial anomaly. And for the most part, the Maquis operated in the Demilitarized Zone, which apparently was nowhere near Bajor or the wormhole.

A.K.A- Veronica Mars.

The Nancy Drew of the new era.

Chakotay wouldn't know about the Dominion due the limited info Maquis intelligence had. They gain info by spying or stealing information.

Also as someone else said, the EMH isn't for intelligence gathering, he's mainly for medical use. He would have no info about the Dominion unless Jem'Hadar & Vorta medical infomation was entered into his data base.

I think that given the fact that they were on the other side of the galaxy, in unknown territory politically speaking, heading for what was speculated to be Borg space, that they had other things to worry about :)

I think that basically the Dominion was something that they knew existed, but outside of the Bajorn sector, probably didn't have much in the way of impact for a couple of years after they were gone.

The Doctor for one thing was not that well informed in the early seasons on a lot of the things.
'Message in the bottle' of course happened later on when the doc got much more attention/respect/info from the crew.
Still, regardless of Voyager being launched after 'The Search', it's possible that only selected senior staff members at that point in time were the only ones aware of the Dominion until the war broke out.

Going by that, it seems reasonable enough that Chakotay knew nothing about the Dominion until he got a letter (like the rest of the crew) from SF informing him that the Maquis were slaughtered by the Cardassians with the help of a species from the GQ.

I'd forgotten about that!

I must say, I find your avatar highly distracting, Jack Bauer! Not that I'm complaining, mind you! ;)

From listening to Zimmerman's description about how to make the LMH entertaining on long range missions, the Doctor is either programed not to learn/seek information automatically or to pretend he doesn't have information immediately at hand so as to make other peoples input into conversations with him "seem" important. Obviously, this would also go to the point of the doctor pretending he hasn't had the same conversation already with 12 different crewmen everytime something awful happens.

Oh! Veronica? That's a weird and unnatural look for Kristen.

(So, who are these blonde people? Models? TV or movie stars? Computer-generated playthings? All of the above?)

Have you never watched Heroes?

It's a good show. heavy continuity. One of those blondes the is the "Cheerleader" who was Ally McBeals daughter and also in that Disney movie where she races a Zebra. Cute but very young. The other is Ali Arter who has been in everything and everywhere as a generic Blonde but she plays a bipolar girl with super human strength with a second personality in Heroes. Kristen bell is Veronica Mars and will be joinging the cast of Heroes eventually, since the third episode of the second season aired yesterday.

Heroes makes even good Star Trek look like Gumby. Voyager is not good Star Trek.

So what do you think of Heroes exodus?
You're trying to get me warned, aren't you? ;)

I like it, I think it's very well done.
However, I expect no less from a great writer like Jeff Loeb.
