Why did those old predictions about the future never come to reality?

Re: Why did those old predictions about the future never come to reali

Ooh! Hunky guys in fishnet shirts!

With the exception of RoboCop himself, the future depicted in RoboCop more or less came true now.

Where Detroit became a crime ridden disaster, with a completely ineffective civil government?

Nah, that never happen.

:)

Popular Mechanics back then was always telling us how great things were going to be in 2000. Still waiting, especially for cars with nuclear engines.

I have a combination supercomputer (by 1950s standards)/telephone that fits in my pocket and allows me to call anyone and access billions of bytes of information anywhere in the world. Did they predict that? Cars with nuclear engines inside seem unnecessary. Seems much better to have a nuclear power plant and a car that can run solely on that power. That's entirely feasible now, it's just a question of money and politics.

Back in 40's 50' and 60's...Engineers never seemed to take budgets or practicality into account..

I'm still waiting for my commuter jetpack, my flying car (not a road-going airplane!!) and my damn hotel on the freakin Moon...

The laws of physics insist on ruining things. The only jet pack that works over time looked to be this--and it isn't a jet pack http://www.retronaut.com/2012/03/the-flying-pulpit-1970s/
Dick Tracy had something like that in 1964 -- propelled and levitated by magnets!

(Science fiction wasn't Chester Gould's strong suit.)

I still felt cheated that the women on Skydiver were wearing bras under their fishnet shirts.

You have an amazing knack, Sir, of mirroring my very own thoughts!

The weirdest one I saw was a Popular Mechanics bit which showed an airplane with THREE FUSELAGES all laid out in a row. They apparently had never heard of this thing called "weight."

This one is one of my favorites:

Steam-powered...totally practical idea! :techman:

Believe it or not, I'm more interested in that article beneath it, about what must be William Jennings Bryan's stance on Evolution.

^ Just watch Inherit the Wind to get that angle. It's a fictionalized version of the Scopes Monkey Trial, but some of the courtroom testimony is based on actual record.

I own it on DVD. Stellar film.

Well for ill or good, the city has yet to come under the control of rather, uh, strict corporate governance. At least insofar as we are aware.

I thought the one here looked pretty good the few times it was seen (actually likely only once, repeated over and over again thereafter).

Of course, I was pretty young then and easily impressed. Probably still am though.

Anyway, you did stipulate "works over time"!!!
