Why aren't they looting in Japan?

It's a shame to see that the myth of the people of New Orleans and other hard hit areas behaving like murderers and thieves en masse after Katrina persists despite the numerous investigations and reports to the contrary in the years since. It's not as if they didn't suffer enough without also being falsely painted as violent thugs who constantly looted for the hell of it (instead of primarily taking water, food, and other basic needs to survive) and shot at National Guardsmen.

Not only are these myths offensive, they're dangerous, in that the fear of nonexistent chaos and hugely exaggerated criminality often led to a slower response by first responders and the National Guard who sometimes waited until they had overwhelming force before entering an area where people were in desperate need of help.

oh..

really most of the looting in orleans during katrina was survival.

sorry i dont have time to check the links now (will later) but i did a lot of reading about katrina from local sources and later from people who were there.

the whole superdome was a horrible place full of crime was horribly over done.
yes it was bad because no from the outside bothered to get supplies to the people.

but there was a group who went out on survival "gathering". they went out in search of food ect and bought back to share.

only one person died of natural causes.

the place was trashed because there were so mny people living there.

really there was no reason at all supplies were not taken into new orleans and other striken places earlier.

reporters from times picayune were traveling in and out of the city through one routes was passable.

really we may start seeing survival looting in japan soon because some of the people feel like they have been forgotten.

looting to me is breaking in and getting tv's ect..
survival is getting food that you need to live.

ps..
i have lost a purse in wendy's and a wallet at our local farmer's market.
got them both back with nothing missing.

yes we have some crime here and maybe not every person will get lost item returned but many do.

they just do things way different in japan . I was born there while my dad was in the military lived there till I was 6 . Out of my adult life living in japan was my favorite memories . I feel the pain the people of japan are going threw . And they are in my prayers.

The other day went barnes and noble use the bath room . wallet fell out did'nt know.
I was in the science fiction section a stranger approached asked my name gave me my wallet nothing was missing . There are good people every were you have to look
and treat people the same way you wanted to be treated . as far as the looting this is japan not california .

I believe they don't loot because they actually take honor seriously and not pay lip service to it like other people do.

I read an article on this and some folks were trying to infer blacks were more prone to looting than the Japanese. I'm sure if good ol' redneckville America got hit with a massive earthquake, Billy Joe Bob and his mullet will be out there grabbing what they can to survive too.

We're talking about a nation where people at Starbucks leave their laptops on the table when they go to the bathroom.

Well, I'm proud to say it's like that here in Canada, too. At least where I am. I leave my brand new MacBook Pro on my table all the time and go to the bathroom, and many others do it,too.

Is this a surprise or unheard of? Would Americans be shocked to hear that? That's...kind of sad.
