Why are reboots (ST, Bond) anticipated, generally well-recieved ...

Re: Why are reboots (ST, Bond) anticipated, generally well-recieved ..

Is Bond "rebooted" at each actor change? I thought all the Bond's before Craig's "Casino Royale" were one loose continuity...

"Reboot" in this context is a slang term and has no precise definition, but a recasting alone doesn't count by any definition.

In fan terms, where "reboot" is used to mean "continuity reset" or "new reality," the Craig Bond films qualify because they go back to the beginning of Bond's career. In industry terms, where the term "reboot" has little to do with continuity and is more about taking a moribund or failing franchise and making it fresh and profitable again or revamping it for a new and broader audience (or at least attempting to), the Craig films qualify because they throw aside the old formula and baggage of the series and give Bond a fresh start.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming.

Not at all. It's the fact that comic books these days have such a much smaller core audience that they really take possession of the product. Therefore, if a reboot or whatever doesn't meet to this small group of people's liking, then the powers that be hear it in spades. And in an industry where 1000 fewer sales of a comic book actually make an impact on the bottom line and can determine if a comic lives or dies, it means something.

On the other hand, Trek and Bond are huge franchises with millions, not thousands, of fans. Yes, if they reject a reboot, then that can be a problem. But if it succeeds, it's a huge deal.

Yep, that's the real reason in a nutshell.

I've only read a handful of the BND trade paperbacks and hardcovers like the one that revealed Jackpot to be a red herring (I don't want to go into details in case someone hasn't read it yet). But one thing has been bugging me. In the final pages of OMD where Peter strikes his deal with Mephisto, Mary Jane whispers something to Mephisto before he does is mojo, implying that maybe the events of BND may be undone or some other weirdness. Has there been any follow up to "the whisper" as to what it was about and how it will or won't affect Spidey? Or was that JMS' way of telling the fans to hold out hope (or Joey Q's way of covering his ass in case BND collapsed)?

Seriously, they've had such great ideas for the BNDverse and screwed ALL of them up:

1) MJ as Jackpot, nice idea. Thanks to her whispers to Mephisto she is now a super on the SHRA side who has to hunt Peter.

2) Harry's back thanks to Mephisto! Great, now he's a hostage: if Peter and MJ come back together all reality will revert including a DEAD Harry.

3) MJ remembers the universe as it was and has to live with the fact that she can never go back to Peter otherwise it will unravel reality and May will be dying again.

For those unaware, 'Brand New Day' is a Spider-Man comic storyline.

Basically, the powers that be decided Peter Parker should not be married because it limited his stories too much.

So they came up with this storyline in which Aunt May is dying, and Peter makes a deal with the devil (literally... Mephisto is the devil in the Marvel U), to save Aunt May's life but in exchange for their marriage being erased from the space time continuum. Reality is rewritten, he's single, a few dead characters are back to life, and so on.

Yes, it was as stupid as it sounds. The sort of nerdy continuity gobbledygook that makes everyone who's not a hardcore nerd's eyes glaze over.
