Why are people attracted to movies made by Michael Bay

Seriously he is the Ed Wood of our generation except a) he has a huge budget and b)people like the montage he puts on screen. No I'm not mistyping, I said montage not MOVIE. The man doesn't seem to understand the very basics of film making (aka PLOT, CHARACTER, PACING, FRAMING etc.). I have to find out who the film editor is because the man (or woman) is either a poor abused soul or just stop caring and knows the Bay will accept whatever on the screen.

Sometimes I feel pity for the guy. He's a child trying to be like John Ford trying to make the great American movie except he has no talent and the Coen Brothers are already there.

Take Transformers. Yes it started as a toy commercial but that doesn't mean you can't transcend their origins and use them to explore the conflict between Good vs. Evil, the nature of war, the idea of alien AI etc. What does Bay deliver tits, explosions, cheap jingoism and bad racist jokes. Or his "masterpiece" Pearl Harbor. Well since we have the definitive Pearl Harbor movie in the form of "Tora Tora Tora" some of you might ask why we need another. I would respond each generation sees things differently and may explore different angles while ignoring other. So what does Michael Bay do, bascially he copies "Tora Tora Tora" and adds tits, explosion, cheap jingoism and bad humor.

And the humor, honestly their is something about a white man who is arrogant enough to think he understands urban culture. There is none of the irony, pathos and even despair that African Americans add to the Hip Hop culture that makes it both vibrant and raw.

BTW feel free to comment on what it saids about humanity that the Global market likes Bay's stuff.

The only Bay's movie I actually liked was Armageddon. Yes, the science was laughable, but the movie was a lot of fun, mostly because of the great cast.
The others I've seen (both Transformers, The Rock, parts of the first Bad Boys, parts of The Island) weren't as enjoyable and I have no wish to ever see them again.

The Least Common Denominator is the secret behind Bay's success.

'splosions and pretty people. The only Michael Bay film that I have enjoyed to any degree is "The Island" and I mostly give credit to Orci and Kurtzman for their script than I do to his directing.

Splosions.
Yup. Summer Popcorn Action flicks are more likely to be popular with thin plot and lots of explosions and effects, then one one with great plotting and less impressive effects.

Deep movies are for other times of the year. Sure you can have an SFX-gasm movie with great plot, characters etc, but, that's not nearly as important as the great effects.

Pearl Harbor was OK, but, way too long. Transformers, I never did get the craze, and watching the movie over the last weekend didn't do a thing for me.

I think it's just because the guy makes movies that are at a bigger and more spectacular scale than anybody else on the planet. And because sometimes people just want to see something that's fun and trashy (and I'm one of them).

Some people like opera and some people like NASCAR; some people like Xtreme Wrestling; some people slow down to look at fatal car accidents.

Some might like mindless eye candy to get them away from their day to day woes

explosions
women
Cars
Scientific jargon that makes no sense

Just leave your brain at the door entertainment

I like his movies because they don't bore me.

I don't give a tinker's damn if that bothers you.

Don't like his movies? Don't watch them.

Sometimes having to use your brain all day is tiring so it's nice to turn it off for 2 hours?

The Ed Wood comparison is quite the hyperbole in this era of Uwe Boll, Birdemic, The Room and a little movie studio called The Asylum.

As a storyteller, Bay sucks (could you imagine his fast-moving camera and quick cut style in a Jane Austen movie?), but in terms of technical proficiency he's got that and more. He knows what looks good on camera and he does have a unique style to his work.

And some people like a wide range of styles in and out of movies... I like both Harry Turtledove and Gene Wolfe for example, and about the only thing they have in common as authors is writing in English . My favorite movie is Casablanca and my 2nd favorite is Brazil.

When I was younger and more dogmatic the popularity of professional wrestling used to worry me as a sign of the apocalypse, but eventually I realized that it was vaudeville, right down to the equivalent of cream pies and seltzer bottles. There's always a need for less-than-mindstretching entertainment, and if it's not what you want then you can always move on.
